African American Culture is found everywhere we can explore their culture through many avenues we are presented in the class, such as Fences by August Wilson, Theatre& Race by Harvey Young, Course lectures of the history of African American Theatre, Previous knowledge, and Course Lectures African American critical Theory. All of these avenues are connected and influential of each other.

Fences by August Wilson takes place in 1957 in the front porch of Maxson’s family house in Pittsburgh, PA. This book discusses the slavery and inequality going on during this time period. Troy’s father was a horrible person and when he was 14 his father raped a girl. Troy became a man at a young age because he knew he could not listen or respect a man who could do such a horrible thing. Manhood to Troy was separating from his father. Troy inherited the characteristics of self-responsibility at this young age. Even though Troy does not have much to do with his kids he does care and is there for them at all times financially he was a very responsible parent. In the play Fences the cast is prominently all black characters the only exception was the white boss. This is what August Wilson was striving for. According to Theater and Race, “ August Wilson advocated for color-conscious casting practices in addition to the expansion of opportunities for minoritized authors”. While troy was young the oppoturinties given to him was very little. However, for Cory growing up later in life is now given an expansion of opportunites. According to Lecture Wilson proposed “the need for more African American Playwrights. Also, he provided roles specifically written for African American Actors and directors, ultimately his goal was to help establish a stronger community of African American audience. Through Fences he was able to show the daily life of a African American family and the struggles they had to go through. The struggles that they were faced with was pronimitley due to their race. According to Theater and Race,” The concept of race exceeds physical appearance. It uses the look of a person as an indicator of expectations of background, history, status, and behavior.” The characters in Fences are being looked upon as stereotypical black people and are not allowed to participate in sports or even anything involving white people. They are not allowed because we are looking at their background and status and saying they are not to the same level. This was a huge problem they black community was faced with.
