Family of Origin:
The actual first stage of the family life cycle is the family of origin experiences. During this phase the main task are building of a solid foundation, and maintaining relationships with parents, siblings, and peers. The family of origin is basically the family you grew up in, which is the center of what shapes who we are. A healthy family of origin exhibits a strong foundation that will be the center piece of that family unit. If effective the family will have a strong sense of togetherness, communication, separateness, and connectedness. This all helps the family to establish healthy boundaries between parents and their children, as well as resolve conflicts in a healthier and productive way. It is stated that when parents exhibit emotions like warmth and caring connections, it tends to promote individuality and autonomy.
In a family of origin that lack what is described as a “less differentiated” family of origin, the growth development of that family will be different in terms of communication, togetherness. There are many issues that impedes families from developing as they should at this particular stage. These things could include abuse such as mother being abused by father could be understood that this type of behavior is normal, and son and daughter can interpret that woman are to endure this behavior and this something that a man does. These unhealthy values and belief teachings can have a lasting affect how children will deal with each other (sibling wise) and in some instances with peers. If this stage of autonomy was mastered by parents during their origin of experience and successfully modeled, then the adolescent will automatically gravitate towards some level of autonomy. This stage is also when parents start to reevaluate their marriage and careers, and is essentially taking on the role of caring for their parents. The caring for parents can be impeded through divorce due the possible parent child bond established. In some cases, divorce tends to sever emotional bonds and the understanding of caring for parents as they age can be damaged.
