Exercise on the Mental Development of Students in the Philippines

In today’s society, physical exercise is considered as a universal activity available to most students. However, some schools “cut physical education and recess periods to leave more time for sedentary classroom instruction” believing that it is for the betterment of a student’s mental development (the editorial board nytimes.com). Students, particularly the athletic ones, engage in physical activity regularly as a form of relieving stress and as a way to bond with peers. That is why these students join organizations that allow them to experience some form of physical activity that they feel comfortable with. These activities can range from sports, such as basketball, to performing arts, such as dance. On the other hand, there are some students who take no particular interest in exercise. These students are mostly driven by other stuff, such as video games, relationships, and academics. But what these students don’t know is that exercise can affect their academic performance as well. A study of over 800,000 students revealed that exercise and mental development have a significant positive correlation (Grissom 11). Student organization-related physical exercise has positive and negative effects on the mental development of students in the Philippines.

Exercise has been known to provide benefits when it comes to academic performance. As stated by Grissom, “compared to mean SAT/9 reading and mathematics scores, there was a consistent positive relationship between physical fitness and academic achievement” (23). This statement supports the cause because test scores are the basis for determining the academic performance of an individual.
