Evolution – History – Music Industry Over time the Music industry has experienced a great deal of change. A technology revolution has changed almost every aspect of the music industry, from the artist right through to the listener/consumer. Not unlike other forms of media, the music industry has been forced to move with the times, adapt to change and this has resulted in a difference for both the industry and the consumer. The industry has shifted from one where the supplier groups held all the power to an industry where the buyer groups now hold most of the power. (Kamp, 2011) Computer, mobile hardware and the internet have become main players within the music industry, and although consumers download their favourite music, and music videos onto their devices - there is also an increasing demand to go to live performances at music venues – the live experience has become more important to the consumer with ticket sales selling out within minutes, and many tickets being resold for exorbitant prices to those who missed out – reflecting the high demand, along with a large variety of merchandise available for purchase at concerts and on the internet at online stores – anything from bracelets, posters, autographed photos to clothing and flashing badges. It is not uncommon for a consumer to fly to another country to experience the live performance of their favourite band or solo artist. A lot of artists have released artist apps, Lady Gaga has done this - having an album app for her Artpop album. Fans can now share sites with others, who in turn share this with others, and the streamers can be tracked by location, this is similar to old fashioned word of mouth, but it has been taken to a whole new level with the incredible speed of today’s world of instant communication via the internet, and mobile devices, and it can be tracked and opens the door for further promotion. Bob Dylan with his Sound Graffiti album, used technology - where he allowed fans to unlock prelease songs from his upcoming album by standing in specific places around the world – an amazing promotional stunt creating a lot of hype, and recently U2 downloaded there latest album to everyone who had an i-tunes account – making big news – promotion in fine
