Ethnic Conflict in the 18th to early 20th Centuries
Overview of Conflict and Response During the 18th to early 20th centuries the two prominent developments in the livelihoods of indigenous peoples were the creation of the Indian Act and Residential schools. During this period however the ethnic conflict was no longer between Indigenous populations and settlers because the initial time of settler colonialism was over and was no longer pre-industrial. The ethnic conflict was between Settlers and Natives where Natives are indigenous peoples. While, this is the type which fits the conflict it does not one hundred percent fit the ethnic divide that occurred because many of the settlers in this case have been in the state for generations. The reason why this response to ethnic diversity was probably used rather than one that further promoted indigenous rights was that the federal government did not want to further the rights of indigenous people. They no longer wanted to kill and eliminate the vast population however they were not willing to give indigenous people power to govern over themselves, share power with the federal government, or let indigenous people into a common area and secede. The probable reason for this would be that the federal government feared for the stability of the state, Canada was still new as the dominion of Canada was only created in 1867 which is only years before the Indian Act was written. The new federal government wanted to ensure that they were in control of the indigenous minority so that there would not be a surprise upbringing which is also the reason for assimilation in residential school, the Canadian government wanted to ensure that indigenous people would view themselves as Canadian and not something

The act brought together all of Canada’s legislation governing First Nation people, which defined who Aboriginals were under Canadian law and set out the process by which people would cease to be Aboriginals. Under the act, the Canadian government assumed control of First Nation people’s governments, economy, religion, land, education, and even their personal lives.
People know about the conflict between the Indian's cultures and the settler's cultures during the westward expansion. Many people know the fierce battles and melees between the Indians and the settlers that were born from this cultural conflict. In spite of this, many people may not know about the systematic and deliberate means employed by the U.S. government to permanently rid their new land of the Indians who had lived their own lives peacefully for many years. With hope that they could even out an agreement with the Government during the progressive era Indian continued to practice their religious beliefs and peacefully protest while waiting for their propositions to be respected. During Roosevelt’s presidency, a tribe leader who went by as No Shirt traveled to the capital to confront them about the mistreatment government had been doing to his people. Roosevelt refused to see him but instead wrote a letter implying his philosophical theory on the approach the natives should take “if the red people would prosper, they must follow the mode of life which has made the white people so strong, and that is only right that the white people should show the red people what to do and how to live right”.1 Roosevelt continued to dismiss his policies with the Indians and encouraged them to just conform into the white’s life style. The destruction of their acres of land kept being taken over by the whites, which also meant the destruction of their cultural backgrounds. Natives attempted to strain from the white’s ideology of living, they continued to attempt with the idea of making acts with the government to protect their land however they never seemed successfully. As their land later became white’s new territory, Indians were “forced to accept an ‘agreement’” by complying to change their approach on life style.2 Oklahoma was one of last places Natives had still identity of their own, it wasn’t shortly after that they were taken over and “broken by whites”, the union at the time didn’t see the destruction of Indian tribes as a “product of broken promises but as a triumph for American civilization”.3 The anger and disrespect that Native tribes felt has yet been forgotten, white supremacy was growing during the time of their invasion and the governments corruption only aid their ego doing absolutely nothing for the Indians.
There were many conflicts and wars during the 18th and 19th century. These conflicts grew and grew because America was trying to become an independent nation, by moving from England and discovering new land the newfound colonies made many enemies. A lot of these conflicts and wars were turning points in history, some for better and some for worse. In this world it is necessary to have conflicts in order to get certain things accomplished. Some of the bigger conflicts or wars known are the American revolutionary war, the war of 1812, the Mexican American war, and the American civil war. There were also many smaller conflicts that led up to these becoming greater known wars and even were some of the starters or outcomes of the wars themselves.
In the 30 years after the Civil War, although government policy towards Native Americans intended to shift from forced separation to integration into American society, attempts to "Americanize" Indians only hastened the death of their culture and presence in the America. The intent in the policy, after the end of aggression, was to integrate Native Americans into American society. Many attempts at this were made, ranging from offering citizenship to granting lands to Indians. All of these attempts were in vain, however, because the result of this policies is much the same as would be the result of continued agression.

Richard Pratt’s “Kill the Indian… and save the man” was a speech to a group of reformers in 1892 describing the vices of reservations and the virtues of schooling that would bring young Native Americans into the mainstream of American society.

They have had major increases in enrollment in colleges and have gone on to get jobs. The jobs the Indians have make them richer and give them their own life they want to live off of the reservations. The youth of the Native Americans have a major choice for their future. They can either choose a new life and be proud to be an American, or they can stay with their roots and family and be proud to be a Native American.
Nevertheless, in the author’s note, Dunbar-Ortiz promises to provide a unique perspective that she did not gain from secondary texts, sources, or even her own formal education but rather from outside the academy. Furthermore, in her introduction, she claims her work to “be a history of the United States from an Indigenous peoples’ perspective but there is no such thing as a collective Indigenous peoples’ perspective (13).” She states in the next paragraph that her focus is to discuss the colonist settler state, but the previous statement raises flags for how and why she attempts to write it through an Indigenous perspective. Dunbar-Ortiz appears to anchor herself in this Indian identity but at the same time raises question about Indigenous perspective. Dunbar-Ortiz must be careful not to assume that just because her mother was “most likely Cherokee,” her voice automatically resonates and serves as an Indigenous perspective. These confusing and contradictory statements do raise interesting questions about Indigenous identity that Dunbar-Ortiz should have further examined. Are

In regard to law, Deloria defines the relationship between the US Government and the Indians as paternalistic. The US Government treated and governed the Indians as a father would by providing basic needs but without given them rights. There has been some improvement with the Indian Reorganization Act in 1934. This act allowed the return to local self-government on a tribal level and restored the self management of their assets. By allowing the Indians to self govern it encouraged an economic foundation for the inhabitants of Indian reservations. Unfortunately only a few tribes have fully taken advantage of this act, while others continue to struggle for survival.
