College Essay- Air Force and West Point
Located in West Point, New York, The United States Military Academy has been training future officers of the Army since 1802. Although West Pont is a public university, the school’s tuition is zero. Over four years of schooling, the cost to attend West Point is zero. It doesn’t cost the students a penny, whether for room and board or books. Being accepted to West Point is the definition of a full ride scholarship. West Point basically offers three types of majors, engineering, foreign cultures and sciences. The most popular majors are engineering, social sciences, foreign languages, literature and linguistics, engineering technologies and business. Some of the top language studies include Russian, Korean and Arabic. This makes sense to me because the countries that pose the biggest threats to us down the road speak one of those languages. West Point also offers summer classes such as parachute jumping, pilot lessons, survival training and numerous classes to keep students busy. Last year 15,171 people applied to West Point. Of those 15,000, 1,200 began this year as freshman. Of the 4,500 students at West Point, seventy-one percent of them are white; nine percent are Hispanic or Latino and seven percent African American. Of the 4,500 young men and women attending West Point, eighty-three percent are male and seventeen percent female. Incoming SAT scores range from 1700 to 2100. West Point places high importance on GPA, extracurricular activities, class rank and SAT and ACT scores. West Point is in a small town with a residential campus. It is located 50 miles outside of New York City, and has its own golf course and ski slope.

...g, not football. For the past 31 years, the Falcons have won 18 national championships, and have never finished below second in the nation. For football, from 2007 to 2012, Air Force went to 6 consecutive bowls, going 2-4 in those appearances. This school has two long running rivalries, one between Colorado State and the other with Hawaii. Since 1957, CSU and AF have been battling for the Ram-Falcon trophy, and in 1966 started to play for the Kuter trophy against Hawaii.
The Air Force Academy holds a special place in my heart, because my dad attended. Growing up so close to the college, my dad and I would go to football games and I loved to atmosphere. The campus is so beautiful and is so close to family that this is a very real possibility for a college. I want to be a Combat Rescue officer and going to the Academy would be a huge stepping-stone towards that goal.
Many stories people read are written for the express purpose of entertainment and sometimes even to persuade, but few are written to teach a moral. The story “A Fable with Slips of White Paper Spilling From The Pockets” written by Kevin Brockmeier does just that. Although relatively short, the story is filled with words of wisdom and life lessons that are meant to instill a sense of selflessness. The story is about a man who finds God’s overcoat from which he finds prayers from the people he encounters. Kevin Brockmeier makes exceptional use of magic realism and symbolism to teach a moral lesson.
In Edmond Rostand’s comedic and romantic drama, Cyrano de Bergerac, Cyrano and De Guiche strong and fiery personalities conflict throughout the novel. Although Cyrano and De Guiche are enemies they feel and want mostly the same things. Cyrano and De Guiche are brought together not only by their love of the same girl, but also by their position in the military and their desire to protect their honor; despite the many conflicts this brings, they are able in the end to respect each other.
USMA eliminates the debt that comes with going to college. The only debt I want to be in is the debt I owe to my country. I also believe that I will grow to understand the Army values more than ever before. I am willing to do whatever it takes to become an officer and I want to do it at the best place possible. I wrote a check worth up to my life swearing in and I want to make that check worth it. Going to USMA will help me pursue my career in the army at the finest and be the best soldier I can be by allowing me to train every day for 4 years to become the best officer I can be. I also want to be able to say proudly that I went to West Point and be a part of West Point’s alumni. One of the biggest reasons I want to go to West Point is because it allows me to start my future the way I want to. It will prepare me to do so by setting me up to persevere as leader and guarantee that I will be an active duty officer in the Army. That is crucial because I want to be a full time soldier; I want my abilities as a soldier, my character traits as well as my leadership to speak volumes about myself and more importantly about what the education at USMA does for its
Given the descriptions of the mental illnesses in our textbook, lectures and various media outlets about the illnesses shown in the HBO movie “Back from Madness – The Struggle for Sanity” I was still surprised how illnesses really affect people (HBO, 1990). When reading textbooks, various media outlets and research papers it is extremely difficult to understand completely the severity of a mental illness. These sources are just descriptions of the illness it doesn’t give a personal account of what the patient is going threw. Taking in account the real affects of having a mental illness on the patient, their family and friends. I was surprised when viewing the documentary that a person with Bipolar I disorder (manic depression) acted the way Todd did. I am aware that Bipolar I disorder is known as someone who has a manic occurrence that results in a period of bizarre elevated mood and behavior that interrupts life. The person will most likely experience episodes of depression. The behavior that I saw from Todd in the movie was completely different than I imagined people who have Bipol...
