‘’Doubt is the brother of shame,’’ is just one of the famous quotes from the theorist Erik Erikson. He was born 1902, he was a German-born American. He was famous for all his quotes. Some of them are, (The Erik Erikson Reader, 2000) "Hope is both the earliest and the most indispensable virtue inherent in the state of being alive. If life is to be sustained hope must remain, even where confidence is wounded, trust impaired," (The First Psychoanalyst, 1957) "What was Freud's Galapagos, what species fluttered what kinds of wings before his searching eyes? It has often been pointed out derisively: his creative laboratory was the neurologist's office, the dominant species hysterical ladies," (Identity and the Life Cycle, 1994) "The growing child must derive a vitalizing sense of reality from the awareness that his individual way of mastering experience (his ego synthesis) is a successful variant of a group identity and is in accord with its space-time and life plan." He was most famous for his theories of development of human beings. Erik’s ideas were influenced by Fued, an id psychologist. Fued focused on the role of culture and society. Erikson just expanded Fued’s thoughts by developing his eight stages of development. Erikson’s theories included 8 stages, Trust V.S Mistrust, Autonomy V.S Shame and Doubt, Initiative V.S Guilt, Industry V.S Inferiority, Identity V.S Confusion, Intimacy V.S Isolation, Generativity V.S Stagnation, Ego Integrity V.S Despair. He came up with these stages by observing children and adults. According to Erikson, “although there is a predominant issue at each stage, the stages are not watertight. Issues of one stage overlap with issues of another.” He also had a book called “Childhood and Society.” Stage one is “Trust V.S Mistrust.” This stage occurs in the ages of birth to 18 months.
