Fear can be conveyed in the novel Frankenstein which can be seen in the opening of paragraph chapter 5. The opening paragraph describes the setting as ‘dreary’ and Victor’s feelings and emotions are shown through the use of words such as ‘anxiety’, ‘agony’ and ‘agitated.’ As the reader begins to read chapter 5, the reader immediately feels as though what is going to happen in the chapter is fearful. On a chill night of November, his scientific dream comes true. He brings his creation to life. Upon the opening of the creature's "dull yellow eye," Victor feels violently ill, as though he has witnessed a great catastrophe.

Fear can be conveyed in the novel Frankenstein in chapter 5 when Victor’s scientific obsession ends with the monster’s birth. “How can I describe my emotions at this catastrophe, or how delineate the wretch whom with such infinite pains and care I had endeavoured to form?” This could suggest Victor is questioning his readers about his “emotions”; should he be delighted or shocked that he created life? It also could suggest that Victor is surprised that a monster constructed by dead parts looks hideous. Further into the story, Victor is affected mentally and physically from nervous exhaustion. This could reflect on his unnatural aims in which he attempts to take God’s role. Also his death at the end of the novel could be a way of God punishing him. During the 1980s Victor could be identified as Satan in that he eventually turns against his Creator and wages war on him and all people. It could be aid the monster’s horrible appearance could be due to Victor’s awareness of committing a sin as people in the 1980s believed it was wrong to mess with nature.

Mary Shelley uses first person narrative in the novel Frankenstein, describing Victor’s feelings and emotions as he creates the monster. “and I had selected his features as beautiful. Beautiful! -- Great God” This adds to the tension and suspense the reader feels. The reader is only allowed to know what Victor is thinking and feeling, thus they don’t know if what is happening is right or wrong. The fear Victor feels is conveyed to the reader through the use of a first person perspective. The narrator's sentences become abbreviated and sudden indicating his nervous, paranoid state. “but I was disturbed by the wildest dreams. I thought I saw Elizabeth, in the bloom of health”
