Brewing the Taste
Coffee is one of the most commonly known tastes in the world. A timeless and a remarkable bean that has left an enchanting flavor on the taste buds of innumerable human beings had begun its journey at the plains of east Africa. “Buna” is the Ethiopian name for coffee. Legend has it that this timeless discovery by a goat has originated in Ethiopia in the 11th century and brewed its way to the north where it profoundly attached itself to the roots of Arabian culture. Currently, coffee is regularly consumed by a great number of people around the world and it has been the most essential drink of our day. Nowadays, there are countless coffee shops and cafeteria that serves coffee everywhere. Although, I believe one doesn’t know the real taste of coffee if they never had the natural fresh Ethiopian coffee that is always accompanied by the traditional ceremony of brewing the coffee. In order, to make a fresh Ethiopian coffee one must have fresh green coffee beans, water and all the necessary equipment’s that is used to roast, ground and brew the coffee.
In Ethiopia, the woman performs the cultural coffee making ceremony that takes about 1 to 2 hours depending on how many people is going to drink. The process starts by the going to the market and buying fresh green beans of coffee. When you go to market one must always take time to choose the right kind of coffee beans, because of the variety grades and types of coffee beans present. It’s believed that a place in the eastern Ethiopia, Harar has the “best” kinds of coffee quality beans. After you get the coffee beans, you must also get a jebena. It is known that has a power to give a sensational feeling to the human body and stimulates our body to be active through out the day. Personally, coming from the birth place of coffee and growing up smelling the aroma of the fresh roasted beans in my house more than 5 times a day, I can say coffee is now the most important part of my day. As written above, I have described the four necessary steps to make the best kind of coffee in your own home. Starting from purchasing the best kind of coffee that comes straight from Ethiopia, to the whole process of washing and soaking the beans, roasting using a small pan, grinding it till the beans change into powder and then brewing it using a coffee pot or a jebena.
