Growing up in an American society, I had the privilege of attending American schools. Since I started school in second grade, I had the chance to learn about some of the greatest Americans; among these were George Washington, John F. Kennedy, and Martin Luther King Jr. But what my history classes, either purposefully or not, left out was Malcolm X. It was not until eleventh grade that I began to learn about Malcolm X. Even then, we simply watched the movie by Spike Lee and the movie, like all Hollywood movies, dramatized in order to make more money. Even though, we watched the movie, we never talked about the significance of Malcolm X during and after Civil Rights movement. It makes me kind of wonder why we never study about Malcolm X.
It is true that Malcolm X had huge flaws during his life but there have been other historically significant people who have had flaws that we study in our class. Kennedy, and Martin Luther King Jr. George Washington, a founding father and praised by the whole Nation, owned slaves. John F. Kennedy, a US President, patronized by everybody was not flawless. ...lm X promoted racism in any way as possible. In fact, it can be seen as a self-defense mechanism in order to justify his falling in love with a white woman. When he first started working on the Autobiography, he was still part of the Nation of Islam, so he still had his racist views of the world. And it seems that in order not to seem like he was a hypocrite, he might have justified his relationship with Sophia, a white woman, as a way of getting back at the white man. Truth be told, Malcolm X, at first, dated a studious black girl named Laura. Together, they attend man dances and it was at this time that Malcolm X first met Sophia. In consequence of meeting Sophia, Malcolm started dating her instead of Laura. From this simple act, it can be seen that Malcolm X did not have any hatred towards white people because he chose to date a white woman over a black woman.
