The contrast of the seemingly hopeless world of confusion and chaotic dysfunction is in the story “No Face” which shows how it is possible to maintain hope and the strength to carry on with what you know is right. Instead of succumbing to what the world tells him, Ysrael creates and maintains the world he wants to live in. Despite being mauled by a pig as a baby and having a disfigured face, Ysrael remains hopeful and ambitious. Ysrael copes with his reality by creating one of his own. He is disfigured and a spectacle for the townspeople to mock, but in his head he is a superhero and everyone that picks on him is an evil he must fight. His powers are that of flight, invisibility, and strength. In the end the phrase “I like to think that he grabbed that first train, instead of what was more likely true, that he had gone out to Chuito’s first, before flying south to get us” (208) is reminiscent of when Yunior said earlier in the book “Our fights didn’t bother me too much. I still wanted him to love me.” (27) Yunior wants to believe that his father cared for his family, but he casts that against what was more likely true. Not because there is hate, but just objectivity and understanding. Yunior has freed himself from the illusions of his father and the only point of view he has ever known. He has not empathized with his father and his struggles, not in a way that makes him vulnerable, but rather lets him move on. There comes a point in every person’s life where they start to see their parents, not as heroes or villains, but as people with flaws like anyone else. Yunior has gained an understanding and closure, not just for his father but for societal judgment overall. He has finally reached a point where he can regain his personal
