How time does a teacher need to get ready for a new school term? One day? No one would suggest that one day is enough time to close out one term and prepare for the next, but that is exactly what happens in some school districts that have year-round schedules. For years different districts have been experimenting with these schedules, and now even more are considering converting to year round schedule. For many reasons, schools should stay with the traditional schedule. Why are so many schools changing to a year-round schedule when study finds that a year-round does not boost learning compared to traditional schools? Paul von Hippel, a sociologist at Ohio State, conducted a study which found that “students in year-round schools learn more during the summer, when others are on vacation when others are on vacation, but they seem to learn less during the school year.” This means that people on the traditional schedules have an eight month lead in education on people in year-round schools. California Department of Education says that the transition costs are administrative planning, staff development, communication, storage, and air. Now the school has to go out their way to make and save money they need. Some schools, such as Yucca Valley Elementary, uses things like box tops, labels for education, or my coke rewards to raise money so they can change their schedule. Parents who feel they must help now will try to buy the specific things that have these fundraiser ideas causing them to send more money.
