The problem with deadlines is that, even if you have enough time to do the task today, you'll procrastinate it for the next 2-3 days, because that's where the deadline ends for that task. What if you had to do something more important after 2-3 days? They are generated as a result of certain thoughts we have in our mind. We re-call certain memories from the past as projected images in our mind that are causing us to experience certain emotions. So we can control our emotions by taking control over our thoughts or mental images and internal dialogue. How's that related to the sense of urgency to get the job done? Well, you can use the "fear of loss," or the pleasure derived from achieving certain tasks, to generate that sense of urgency. The thoughts that you hold in your mind, supported by your internal dialogue to justify and explain things, can generate the emotion of urgency to get the job done. That's why a lot of people get that emotion only when a deadline approach. You can do this without deadlines by causing it yourself every time you want. Let's say, you have to write a book. It is quite a creative task. Most people procrastinate on creative activities. So you have to ask yourself what are you going to lose, if you do not finish that book today? What's your worse fear that might happen as a result of delaying that activity? Should you wait more or do it right away to avoid that fear?
