Words are the strongest tool people possess; one word can create a thousand emotions, while one sentence can carry someone through the world, and that is where I become the person I want to be. I am extremely shy and boring by nature; I am the person who sits so quietly in the classroom that the teacher forgets I am even apart of his or her class. However, books give me the chance to live outside my comfort zone and adventure to places I never thought imaginable. A brand new hardback brings me the kind of bliss that an Olympian receives after winning his first gold metal; nothing compares to the feeling of excitement I get when I brush my fingers across the cover, and open up the book for the smell of paper that fills my nose, as I fan the pages. Reading transports me to places that my feet cannot travel and gives me a chance to escape my troubles for a few hours, which is why I do not understand how the appeal is fading. My earliest memories can be found at the hands of paperback novels. Books were my escape from the world around me. The thrill of being able to leave behind the world and it’s baggage and enter another that books provided captivated me, and left an impact on me. The emotion I experienced solely from taking a small step into another person’s story was unlike any I had felt before. I desperately wanted others to feel what I had felt, and love whatever I had become entranced by with the same passion as I did.
Ever since I was a child, I've never liked reading. Every time I was told to read, I would just sleep or do something else instead. In "A Love Affair with Books" by Bernadete Piassa tells a story about her passion for reading books. Piassa demonstrates how reading books has influenced her life. Reading her story has given me a different perspective on books. It has showed me that not only are they words written on paper, they are also feelings and expressions.
I began to read not out of entertainment but out of curiosity, for in each new book I discovered an element of real life. My dad taught me that books could be my teachers, my mom taught me that our backyard could be my classroom, and my sister showed me that you could bring books into the swimming pool. In the book, The How of Happiness, author and researcher Sonja Lyubomirsky sets her book apart from other self-awareness books by being the first to utilize empirical studies. She uses data gained through scientific method to provide support for her hypothesis. This hypothesis consists mainly of the idea that we have the ability to overcome genetic predisposition and circumstantial barriers to happiness by how we think and what we do. I can remember like it was yesterday that I had a passion to read. Learning new words and reading new books excited me as a teen. It all started when I was in ninth grade. I wasn’t your typical fourteen-year old child reading children library books. I loved reading the young adult books. My favorite author was Ellen Hopkins. One text that does this is “The Book is Dead”, by Sherman Young, which is a confronting article about the claimed future of the book. Questions that are raised in this text that we are challenged with are related to the perception of books in our society, the accessibility of books and finally the advancement of technology. Young does this through the techniques of; repetition, descriptive language, emotive language and inclusive language. When being compared to the past, our society’s perception of books has changed dramatically.
Each generation witnesses new feats, new lifestyles, and new ideas of how the world is and how it should be. The works of art that are produced during that time period are reflective of the shifting world. Literature contains many genres that attract a variety of different people; however, each literary classic that is taught in the classroom reflect the changing history of the world and how humanity has evolved throughout the centuries. Early Modern Europe experienced several tragedies in which the citizens sensed that there must be a better way to live where happiness was more familiar. Alterations for what truly defines absolute happiness in a society during these times of catastrophe were expressed through utopian literature. Thomas More’s Utopia, Tomasso Campanella’s City of the Sun, and Caron De Beaumarchais’ The Marriage of Figaro together attempt to answer what truly creates a happy civilization during different periods of crisis within Europe. Each of these utopian literature’s suggest a different origin that happiness derives from, soundly signifying that change in Europe would be beneficial. The revolutionary ideas of change in Europe proposed by Utopia, City of the Sun, and The Marriage of Figaro through their individual utopias, demonstrated their beliefs that such change of social classes, the expression of pleasures morally, and a more unified government would lead to a happier, less corrupt society.
According to Buddha, “Happiness does not depend on what you have or who you are. It solely relies on what you think.” To be happy, one must know what happiness is and then find aspects that make them feel that way. Happiness is not a brief sense of positive feelings, but a lasting sense of contentedness that can be achieved by keeping close relationships and engaging in habits that seem contradictory at first to happiness.
