The reason I chose to study Islamic Feminism and Afghanistan, is that for many people, these words do not belong in the same sentence. Afghanistan has come to be recognized as a country that follows strict and fundamentalist Islam, hindering the lives of women and even damaging their lives. Since I entered high school, Afghanistan has been known to me and my generation as a country ruled by the Taliban. Many of the stereotypes and stigmas Westerners put on conservative Islam stem from the images our media has covered regarding the Taliban rule. First, I will go through a brief explanation and summary of the Taliban organization to gain a framework.
The Taliban:
The Taliban is an Islamic movement, which ruled most of Afghanistan from 1996-2001. Most of the leaders, including the founder of the movement, Mullah Mohammed Omar, were simple Islamic religious scholars with limited education and little exposure to modern thought in the Islamic community. However, the word Taliban translates from the language of Pashtun to mean: religious students. After the fall of the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan in 1992, Afghanistan fell into trouble. Also, in the 2002 state of the union address, President Bush honored Afghan woman Sima Samar for acting as a true Muslim Feminist. Samar, 46-year-old physician, operated secret clinics and schools for women despite death threats from Taliban. She was appointed Afghanistan’s first minister for women’s affairs, but had to resign due to death threats from conservative clerics. She is now the head of Afghanistan’s human rights commission, though she is under 24-hour watch by body guards, Samar publicly announces her belief that Islam does not promote lack of respect for women. She leads as a wonderful example that women can be leaders in Afghanistan, even post-Taliban.
The Taliban or “students” is a political-religious group founded in Kandahar, Afghanistan. They controlled 90% of Afghanistan from 1996-2001, according to Encyclopedia Britannica. However, the problem with wars claiming to “save” women is that the majority of the time women are just becoming victims of western misogyny as opposed to eastern misogyny (Viner, 2). Just because some women choose to wear head coverings doesn’t make them repressed, “liberation for [Afghani women] does not encompass destroying their identity, religion, or culture and many of them want to retain the veil” (Viner, 2). The three very basic rights in America that are not given to Afghan women are marriage, education and speech. Marriage in America is a choice, however in Afghanistan it is more of a business deal for the family. “80 percent of marriages in poor rural areas are either forced or arranged” (Life as an Afghan Woman). The father’s voice in a family overshadows the female leaving her with no say in a life long marriage. If a woman refuses to marry the man she is paired up with she will be punished for her rebellious actions. On the same hand, going to school is not as easy as it is here in America. All women in America are given the privilege by law to attend school free of charge, while it is much more difficult for an Afghan woman to receive an education. “ Only 40% of Afghan girls attend elementary school, and only one in 20 girls attend school beyond the sixth grade” (Life as an Afghan woman). Loads of families aren’t provided with option to attend school while others do not allow their women to receive an education because they are afraid their daughter will be punished for anything she does and could be killed on the way to school. Not only can women not get married and go to school without worries, but also they are not allowed to speak out for themselves in public. Islam has influenced many cultures around the world. For centuries, Islam has had an immense influence on the Afghan culture. According to this religion, women have no rights. The men took advantage of this system by translating only what they wanted from the Koran; to enslave the women in our culture for their own desires. From the beginning, the women on no account had any civil rights or have power over their own lives, and most were uneducated and had accepted what their teachers taught in schools and mosques. My family moved to the US when the Russians invaded Afghanistan. I thank god to be one of the lucky women who did not have to live in Afghanistan and for giving me a better place to live in America. Unfortunately, this was not the case for the majority of the Afghan women. Under the cruel Taliban government the women were banned to work, and were not allowed outside their homes without being escorted by a man. The film Osama, inspired by a true story, is about Osama, a young girl who did lived in Kabul while the Taliban regime. Through Osama's story, I had a chance to see what it was like to live in Afghanistan as a woman. This is a story of a girl whose faith was in the hands of many different people: her family, the Taliban soldiers, and the city judge. Osama and I have different lives on different continents; however, we both could have had more rights and better life if we were born men.
Travesties are committed against women every day, in every country, in every city, town and home. In Afghanistan women are not only discriminated against, they are publicly reduced to animals. Women are deprived of basic human rights: they are not allowed to travel outside their homes without being completely covered by the traditional shroud-like burqa; they are not allowed to speak or walk loudly in public; they are not allowed to laugh or speak with other women; they are not allowed to attend school nor work; they are expected to be invisible; they are the ghosts of what were once educated, notable, and successful women. With their ruthless and extreme laws, the Taliban have effectively removed the physical presence of women in Afghanistan. The Taliban have stolen the very souls of these women and have turned them into the “living dead” of Afghanistan. The Taliban’s harsh restrictions and extreme religious laws have tainted the freedoms and basic human rights of the once valued and prominent women of Afghanistan.
According to a veteran, anxiety and depression are often misdiagnosed as PTSD. Since the Vietnam War, the occurrence and diagnosis of PTSD has skyrocketed. After a sev-ere reduction in the rate of PTSD in veterans where poorly documented PTSD cases were culled from the collection, Bruce P. Dohr-enwend of Columbia found a 13% reduction in the lifetime rate of PTSD; in a continuation of Dohr-enwend’s work, McNally concluded that a majority of PTSD patients were fit to live in everyday life, re-ducing the lifetime rate of PTSD by another 7% (Dobbs 2). In addition, many veterans have been known to be over- or under-reporting their PTSD symptoms, making the accurate diagnosis even more trouble-some.

The first human blood transfusion on record was conducted by Dr. Jean-Baptiste Denys, a French physician during the late 1600’s. Although Denys’ transfusions weren’t sound proof and often written off as unorthodox, he unknowingly ushered in a new era of medicine and laid the foundation for modern advances in Hematology. I have a friend who has sickle-cell disease and she has told me that while she has never had to be turned away from getting a blood transfusion, she has seen it happen to other people many times. Before talking about this with her and researching about the state of blood donation in Mississippi. I had never even thought this would occur. Other than the time when I was younger my sister’s best friend was diagnosed with leukemia and had to have blood transfusions, I have been very lucky in that this has never really affected me per say. In the book, Women in the Middle East, a Saudi Arabian proverb states, "A girl possesses nothing but a veil and a tomb" (Harik and Marston 83). The key words, "veil" and "tomb" lend evidence to the fact that many Middle Eastern women lack identity symbolized by the “veil” and lack the right of ownership except for their veil and the tomb. This statement further enforces the notion that many women in the Middle East are expected to serve and tolerate the oppression of the men in their lives throughout their lives on this earth. Moreover, it confirms that many of these women do not get the opportunity to obtain education, join the work force, and even participate in the political affairs of the country. This arrangement further helps the Middle Eastern men to view women as their properties, servants, or even as slaves. Ultimately, there are three main reasons why Middle Eastern men engage in the act of oppressing their women.
An article by Marycarol Rossignal recognizes PTSD in military veterans. The article gives statistics, the three main symptoms of PTSD in depth, screening, treatment, and lifelong management. The statistics, symptoms, screening and treatment were able to be used in the paper. There were no studies identified, but most of the information can easily be incorporated into nursing care (Rossignal & Chandler, 2010).

Lila Abu-Lughod’s article titled, “Do Muslim Women Really Need Saving?” takes a closer look at the problematic ethnocentric approach many have when trying to gain an understanding of another culture that may be foreign to that individual. In this analytical paper, Lughod looks at women in Islam, specifically the treatment of women and how it might be utilized as a justification for invading into a country and liberating its people. The country Lughod refers to in her article is Afghanistan, and Lughod points out the misunderstanding from the people to the Bush administration like First Lady Laura Bush who believed that intervention was necessary to free women from the captivity of their own homes. It is important to consider the role that different lenses play into all of this, especially when one’s lenses are being shaped by the media. Depictions of covered women secluded from society leave a permanent image in the minds of many, who would then later support the idea of liberation. This paper will discuss that the practice of using propaganda when referring to the lifestyle in the Middle East is not exclusive to the U.S; rather it has been utilized throughout history. Additionally, we will take a closer look on the importance of symbols, such as veils in this case; help to further emphasize the cause to liberate. Finally, we will analyze Lughod’s plea towards cultural relativism and away from liberal imperialism.
