“Sit with your legs closed, act like a lady,” or “Boys don 't play with dolls.” I 'm sure many of us heard this growing up. Women aren’t allowed to be bossy, because only men are supposed to be leaders or because it 's a manly trait. Men aren 't supposed to show their emotions because that is thought to be a weakness and men are supposed to be strong. Men and women have specific qualities that are dictated to their gender by their society. Men and women are not allowed to pick up traits from the other gender, although it is said to be the very thing that makes us human. Men get momentary advantages in this lifestyle, while women suffer most. Although, both sides suffer in the end.

When the boy is taken in for an operation, the surgeon (doctor) says 'I can not do the surgery because this is my son’.” Most people answer that the men are in a homosexual relationship or the child may be the adopted child of the father who died, the doctor being the biological father, or they sit in silence because they don’t know. Only 14-15% of people got the answer to the riddle; that the doctor is the mother. This shows that we as a society have an unconscious gender bias against women. When a woman has some power, both men and other women feel threatened. When a women does something it’s unappreciated and undervalued, but when a man does something it becomes really important. For example, nurses used to be all males they were appreciated and paid enough; but, now that the nurses are female it’s not as appreciated and they aren’t paid that well. In most occupations when men and women work the same job, usually the man is paid more. Some people say that the man needs to take care of his family, so he should be paid more. Women have families too! We don’t just work for ourselves. Women are undervalued, and we try to climb the corporate ladder we are seen as greedy and

This situation goes for not only women but men as well. From an early age, both boys and girls should be taught humanity, in terms of how both men and women should be treated. Unfortunately, this rarely occurs and generations of boys and girls grow up thinking that this is the way of the world. Therefore, the vicious cycle of unfair practices is still going on to this day with little to no advancements.
Society in general has a way of assigning men and women with individual roles that need to be complied with. To clarify, in the 1950s and 1960s, American women were required to maintain their homes while raising their children and making sure the husbands were happy. On the other hand, American men had to provide for the family and protect them. Displaying characteristics not parallel to one’s gender is rarely unobserved and almost always has negative consequences because society seeks to maintain order. In reality, the people cannot conform to society’s “norms” because people have the right to be independent of society, yet be a part of it without sacrifice. Society places ideas concerning proper behaviors regarding gender roles. Over the years, I noticed that society's rules and expectations for men and women are very different. Men have standards and specific career goals that we must live up to according to how others judge.

She gave birth to a deviational child and when she asked her sister, Mary Strorm, for help, she was rejected and humiliated instead when all she wanted to do was save her innocent child. Therefore, the women are to bear all the consequences and blame for a deviational child and the males are never blamed for this.
"Today's girl knows she's supposed to fulfill all the traditional "girl" expectations-- look pretty, be nice, get a boyfriend--while excelling at the "girl skills" of empathy cooperation, and relationship building" (257): This is said by Stephen Hinshaw, a professor of psychology at the University of California at Berkley. This quote shows how some of the things girls are expected to achieve...however it does not show what boys are expected to achieve. Greta Christina wrote the article "5 Stupid, Unfair and Sexist Things Expected of Men", in this article, Greta lists and discusses 5 points: 1. Men are expected to get in physical fights. 2. The contradiction of being a good husband who is caring and supportive but not caring to much about his wife so that he is not "whipped" as his friends would call it. 3. Men are supposed to want sex and be ready for sex all the time. 4. Being tough, showing no emotion. 5. Fear of being gay. The pressure and expectations that society places on men and women are extremely diverse, which causes substantial differences between the two.
Sex and gender inequality is one of the many issues handled in this book. This has always been a social problem in America and other nations. Sex and gender are different terms, where sex refers to the biological difference between men and women while gender refers to the differences between females and males that the society constructs between the two. These inequalities therefore, are society-created where men and women are treated differently not because of what they can do but who they are. The author dedication to portrayal of America as a society that disregarded their rights is therefore, in an attempt to create a society with gender equity and equality where a woman and man will be treated equally in work stations and other public places. The physical characteristics of women and their position as child bearers gave the men a convenience to use, exploit people who were their sex mates, companions and guardians of their children.
Author and feminist Alix Kates Shulman said once: “Sexism goes so deep that at first it’s hard to see, you think it’s just reality” (McEneany). That quote sums up perfectly the way our society runs. There is no class teaching children how to act according the their gender. Yet little boys and little girls learn at a very young age what is expected of them. They get ideas about their gender roles from their parents, their school teachers and subconsciously from the toys they play with and the television shows they watch.
As one looks through society, one starts to see many cracks and loopholes where one set of standards does not apply the same way for men as it does to women, and vice versa.
In today’s society it appears to be that both genders have certain traditional roles. We see these things every day, everywhere one goes, and even on television. Women have always been known to be the weaker gender. They are the ones who shouldn’t hve a real paying job. According to men, the womens “job” is to sit at home all day doing chorse such as cooking, cleaning, washing, and taking care of everyone else. Men are known to be the strong gender, “The Boss.” Women and men have stereotype gender roles. Women are as strong, if not stronger than me. They are capable of doing the same things men do.
These are socially constructed ideas passed down through generations. Men have been told from the get go that they are the dominant ones. Women are always told to act like a lady. A woman is also told to make her husband happy, but a man is never told the same thing. Even in pornography, we can see that females are just trying to please men.
Throughout Western history it was known to have this Patriarchal system in which the men are the head of the family, and community, during which these spheres between the male and female were divided, each having their own set of roles: the male in the public view and the women in the private view. The men worry about what is going on outside the home like politics, money, control over property while the women take care of what happens on the inside of the home doing things like taking care of the children and doing the house work. With these roles set in place the women have had a hard time being respected because of this Patriarchy.
Male and female were treated differently in terms of gender still in the year 1955, when this story first publish. People were living with the mentality where male were given a high position in society. Perhaps this was the cause of same mentality, male characters in the story don’t treat women as their equal. Gender discrimination has deep roots in history and was still exist in 1955. In this regard, there was an article published in New York Times dated February 16, 2013 by Stephanie Coontz named “Why Gender Equality Stalled”; she writes, “In 1963, most Americans did not yet believe that gender equality was possible or even desirable”. When it comes to gender men tend to be superior to females. Society has portrayed certain characteristics to women and men. Society has created each gender to have their own specific roles. There 's this idea that femininity has been reconstructed males are more valued than females. These generalizations of gender the men or women are taught child usually from parents and teachers or someone older. Society has expectations from women and male. Men women are portrayed as to have emotions be more sensitive week and need someone to depend on. Men are taught at a young age to not show emotions, they have to be a leader, and be stronger than women are. And if men are failed to do what they are expected 2 they are seen as less of a man or disgrace to mankind. The differences between women and men are not solely biological. Our society’s culture has established a set of unwritten cultural laws of how each gender should act, or in other words society has ascribed a stereotype. Men’s gender identity has been one of masculinity, and masculinity is defined as referring to a man or things described as manly. What does manly mean though? Is a male manly if he is “Mr. Fix-it”, or the jock, or if he sits on the couch on Sunday watching football?
