Many women of the Progressive Era were industrial workers and often endured deplorable working conditions. Briefly, in the progressive Era women entered the workforce, despite the opposition from men. However, there was a discrimination and gender tension. However, women played an essential role in the expanding industrial economy. As in the popular culture, though, the workplace (and later the Women's Union League) was plagued with gender assumptions. First, women were directed toward the 'female' work, e.g. the needle trades.
