Women In Prison Analysis

Before seeing The Grey Area, I could not picture how hard it is for women in prison. From the outside looking in, the women that commit crimes are seen just like men are: people who wanted to commit a crime because they simply wanted to. However, this is not always the case for some women. Many of the women in prison today have been victims of drug/sexual abuse, domestic violence, and much more. A lot of the women who were in the Iowa prison from the film were there because of crimes related to traumatic experiences that happened in their lives. The experiences they went through as children and young adults shaped their lives and altered their minds in negative ways. A boyfriend crime is when a woman is essentially an “accessory” to the crime because she was with the boyfriend when he committed it. The woman does not have to act at the scene, but just her being there and not reporting it will send her to prison. Women can sometimes be forced to commit crimes as well by their boyfriend. I am not aware of the results for women who go through these situations, but I feel like the justice system probably does not recognize situations such as these. They may see is as a woman “committed a crime” therefore, she should be sent to prison. The crime is not entirely the woman’s fault, yet she is the one who is doing the time. People tend to judge the crime without seeing it from the other person’s perspective. We like to think that the women have a choice whether or not to do the crime. However, when their life is at stake, their choice is to try to stay alive. We are not the ones being held at gunpoint, or being beaten if we do not do as we are told. Therefore, it may be difficult to understanding why someone would commit a crime if they are being forced
