An issue that has been debated numerous times, is whether competitive sports should be included in schools. Many people are against sports due to injury rates, but it is clear that there are many benefits that outweigh the negatives in terms of importance. Even the professional tennis player Billie Jean King says, “Sports teach you character, it teaches you to play by the rules, it teaches you to know what it feels like to win and lose, it teaches you about life.” I believe that there should be competitive sports in schools because doing sports gives kids a healthier lifestyle, they will learn basic life skills, and the kids will have a better mental health by playing sports. For example, this is because sports teach athletes how to set goals, and they learn how to cope with failure and success (Mango 3). This suggests that once you know how to set goals you can have a bigger motive to encourage you to get to your destination faster. Also if you learn how to cope with failure and success you won't be a sore loser and you will learn how to win graciously. Being someone who can win and lose graciously will make you a better person which will get you to more places other than being someone who nobody likes. Another piece of evidence is that normally shy kids can become leaders in situations they can become strong in. (Watson 4). This is vital because shy kids will get a chance to lead kids which will boost their self-esteem.
