Should there be bag limits on fishing?. What are bag limits you might ask, well bag limits are “the amount of fish you can keep per species in a certain state”. Here in Wisconsin we do a lot of fishing so we have bag limits for almost each species of fish in our state. The DNR enforces these limits. There are some people that agree with the limits, and some who don’t think the should be bag limits at all. I agree that we should have bag limits and here is why, They keep fish population at a healthy level, they keep our lakes and rivers food chain in order, and they keep people from overfishing.

The first reason why we should have bag limits is that they keep fish population in order. We need fish populations to stay healthy so they can reproduce successfully and because fish keep our lake and river healthy. Fish population can be easily manipulated by the amount of fishing that is done. Most good fishermen want to keep fish population healthy because it provides more fish for future fisherman and anglers. This would be food chains. Food chains are a key part in any wildlife around the world. They are a system that shows what eats what from the plant-small prey-Large predators. In our lakes smaller fish eat aquatic plants , the smaller fish are eaten by larger predators and so on. But if one part of the food chain is messed up, like if all of the large predatory fish were fished out, there would be nothing to eat the small prey fish. This would cause the small prey fish to overpopulate and more mouths to feed. This would cause the aquatic plant population to decline. Now you see how one slight change of a part of a food chain can screw everything up. Which brings us to our next
