Reading the article I realized that, along with several other students, I have been sitting for longer than they are supposed. We are not supposed to obtain as much sedentary time as we are receiving at home and at school. Students should be allowed to get up every thirty minutes and do a small amount of physical activity or at least streche. It is proven that people who sit in small periods of times such as half an hour tend to have a fifty-five percent lower risk of death compared to the ones who sit for over half an hour without getting up and moving around. Something that should be done at school is be letting teachers know about what is being said through the article and how being sedentary for a long period can have a negative impact
Image spending 24 hours,12 months and 365 days of just being inactive then BAM! you die. A 2012 study from the England University of Leicester showed that prolonged sitting was also linked to a greater risk of death from all causes. Exercising has become a norm in our society today with things such as gyms opening, vegan diets, and even television programs, but as of early 2018, 80% of adults don't get the recommended amount of exercise. I believe that exercise is important and everyone should participate in trying to improve their health. Just think about it and it might surprise you.
Mrs. Obama uses research to prove her point about youth exercising saying, “Experts recommend at 60 minutes of exercise a day of activity.” (426) Mrs. Obama says that this is the bare minimum amount of exercise needed each day to prevent someone from becoming obese. Exercising does not have be sports related, but can be anything from walking to the store or school. The third point of “Let’s Move” is to encourage the youth to exercise for at least 60 minutes a day. However exercising may seem boring to some, but Mrs. Obama says school recess and physical education classes will count towards the 60 minutes per day, “And we’re working to get more kids participating in daily physical education classes and to get more schools offering recess fir their students.” (426) The current generation tends to spend most of their time on the couch, thus why under the “Let’s Move” program Mrs. Obama sets a goal, “We’ve set a goal…by 50 percent in the next five years.” (426) Mrs. Obama wants half the kids that go to school to not ride transportation and become active by just going to school. Children who ride their bike to school or walk have a higher chance of escaping
With the expansion in technology, children are hastily becoming more and more inactive. In the past century, kids would play outside from sunrise to sunset. Little did they realize, that playtime served as great daily exercise. Physical activity is a key necessity in keeping a healthy lifestyle. With the advancement of technology and the growing popularity of video games and television, fewer children are getting exercise. Stationary activities, such as video games and watching T.V., are keeping children inside and away from exercise. To blame just the kids for this lack of exercise would be wrong. The parents are the ones responsible for giving the children these games, but that is not all bad. Where it does turn bad however, is when the kids are given these games or televisions without a time restraint. Through research, they have found that 26% of children watch television for more than four hours a day. In efforts to encourage outside playtime for kids, Nickelodeon shut down programming daily from noon to 3pm. This seemed to be a great idea, but does it really help? Children are in school session Monday through Friday from 8am 3pm. The time Nickelodeon chose to go dark is the same time child...
Additionally, Ludwig really emphasizes that more physical activity is needed, “ We need to make physical activities fun again” (Ludgwig 2010). Children are suppose to go outside and play, rather than go to a gym and exercise. Since sport programs and physical education programs are slowing diminishing because of budgets, it is the parent’s responsibility to encourage their children to be active and play. Children are becoming used to sitting inside in front of media which is leading to
The level of the population’s level of physical activity is becoming a major public health concern in the United States (Wahlgren, 2011). As a result of urban sprawl, Americans rely heavily on personal vehicles to travel to work or other destinations. This is leading to a sedentary life style for the public as they take to their cars to travel to their destination. The public’s perception of the environments in which they live in are likely influencing their behaviors resulting in their dependance on personal vehicles. (Wahlgren, 2011). The physical environment and peoples’ levels of physical activity are directly connected. Low density zoning and auto-dependent development is resulting in the promotion of sedentary life styles. Most activities, like commuting to work or shopping, requires the use of a personal vehicle because of the area’s isolation in residential zones and commercial zones (Ewing, 2010). Alternative modes like walking or bicycling are rather impractical, as the areas often have little to no sidewalks or other pedestrian friendly amenities (Marshall, 2009). The Low density design is developed because residential homes have fewer units per acre and commercial buildings tend to only be a couple of stories and spaced further apart. The sizes of lots tend to be bigger to accommodate large parking lots that are often oversized and unsafe for pedestrians.
It is common knowledge that exercise is one of the best ways to stay healthy. Regular exercise has many effects that benefit the human body. But how much exercise is needed to see improvements? The Center for Disease Control states, that according to the 2008 Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, two types of physical activity are needed to improve your health- aerobic and muscle-strengthening. The CDC recommends 150 minutes a week of moderately intense aerobic activity, like brisk walking, or 75 minutes a week of vigorously intense aerobic activity, like jogging or running along with two days a week spent doing muscle strengthening activity on the major muscle groups. Consistently following this recommended

Physical education exists in schools to help students perform physical activity in schools and promote healthy lifestyles. It is extremely important that physical education teachers promote physical activity and healthy diets to young students because they are the ones who will be at risk of developing health issues such as obesity. Physical educators need to teach the younger generation the proper way to stay healthy so that they will continue to be physically active outside of physical education classes and so that they remain physically active throughout their lives.... ...
