Why Teens Are Often Depressed?

A fifteen year old girl tries to remember when was last time she really enjoyed something, the last time she talked to someone willingly. Depression is defined as when a person loses interest in things they use to love, and they become despondent in everything they do. Teen depression triggers haste decisions made by teens such as running away, suicide and self harm. There is really no immediate cure to depression but it is treatable. Understanding what groups of teen’s depression is more prevalent in can be the proactive why to solve the problem. Due to the extra pressure put on teens who are athletes, part of the LGBTQ community, and the children of high achieving parents cause depression to be more prevalent in these groups.

Parents can’t expect all A’s on every assignment and a perfect GPA throughout the whole year. Madeline Levine made her point in the article "Why Affluent High Achieving Teens Are Often Depressed.” “....I've been given.It's normal for parents to have a sense of their "fantasy child" and have aspirations for their kids, but the problem is kids need the opportunity to develop parts of themselves.” During high school is usually when a person start understanding who they are and where they fit into and, maybe their not meant to be what there parents expect them to. Being constantly burdened to always do what someone else expects cause teens to face depression. It’s not possible for everyone's child to be in the top ten percent and when parents replicate their own interest, values and even professions in their children they are doing nothing but getting in the way of their own children's success (Levine). Parents can’t always expect their children to do things the way they want them to. Taking exams is stressful enough already and being worried about getting the grade your parents want just makes it worse. This causes students to have anxiety when taking tests, and when they don’t get the grade they had hoped that’s when the real problem starts. Erinn Hutkin from the San Diego Union Tribune explained in his article "Depression Rates Run High Among LGBT Community.” During the adolescence years is when a person starts getting a sense of who they are and teens who are members of the LGBTQ community are 8often faced messages such like “god hates you.” Being tormented with messages like that cause teens to start hating themselves for something that they have no control over. The discrimination and hate cause the LGBTQ community to suffer higher rates from depression. Hutin then points out “In society, gay and bisxuals are often taught it doesn’t matter how smart or how good looking you.” For this very reason is why the LGBTQ youth have high rates for suicide and self harm (Hutin).
