Why should we study a foreign language? Hundreds of years ago, people used to stay in their native land, get along with their compatriots, and speak in their native languages. So nobody thought that there was any reason to study a foreign language. However, notions have changed nowadays. People have started to leave their hometowns, go into the world, and make new friends all over the world. Students in California State University, Fullerton(CSUF) also have the needs to work, travel or research in multiple languages. As other organs and muscles, the brain ought to be trained in order to increase the function, such as memory. According to Hernandez, shows that while languages are translated, the activities in subcortical areas involved in motor control, which is associated with various memory functions, increases, and brings about the maturation of other areas such as the anterior insula, cerebellum, and the anterior cingulate gyrus.(p.131) Those areas are considered relative to higher cognitive functions, such as learning, decision making, abstract thinking, and emotion. Hence, studying in other languages helps promote brain development. In consequence, study a foreign language for a period may advance the memory, strengthen students ' learning ability, and make their perform better. In spite of the fact that students usually think they have trouble in learning a new language, it is undeniable that there are many advantages because of it. Learning second language can give assistant to enriching experience, doing research and advancing study in the student life and being more competitive to get a job.
