Why People Enjoy Fear

You’ve just finished a scary movie at your house and it’s now 10:47pm, and you remember you are the only one home. Its pitch black and you hear a creaking noise from upstairs so you begin to panic and become completely frozen, this is the feeling of fear. Fear is an unpleasant emotion caused by the belief that someone or something is dangerous, and some people go out of their way to seek that feeling. This now creates the question why? Why do some people enjoy the feeling of fear? Author’s Allegra Ringo and Steph Yin articles about fear help discover the answer to that very question. The difference is that Steph goes more in detail about the science behind why human being enjoy fear. Both Yin and Ringo mentioned David Zald, a neuropsychologist at Vanderbilt University in their articles. In Yins article he goes more in depth of explaining what dopamine is and how and why it is released more when you are scared. He then goes on to talk with another Doctor by the names of, Dr. Kerr. Dr. Kerr explains to Yin why emotions play a significant role in fear. One factor is because fear itself is an emotion, an important one at that. Kerr says, “If your friend is captivated by the horror movie you are watching together, you process that by recreating the same feeling in your own mind, and that can bring you closer together. People also tend to hold onto memories of fear more intensely, she said, so if you have positive associations with a scary situation, like going to a haunted house, you’ll likely want to do it again.” (Yin, 2016, Paragraph 7). Yin in his article was more about having a serious tone with all facts, while Ringo had facts but also had entertaining stories and opinions in her article. Because of this both articles are worth reading but, Ringo’s style of writing caught my attention more and made me want to read more making her article more
