Recommended: Oprah influence on the world

In my opinion somebody that is considered an “outlier” according to Gladwell is Oprah Winfrey because even with all the heartbreaking things that have happened to her she still managed to go forward with her life and become very successful. One example why I think Oprah is an outlier is because her story inspires most and even through the most tragic times she managed to get through it and become one of the most successful women on the planet. One of the many reasons why Oprah is recognized as such an amazing woman is because she managed to move forward with her career and with her life after all the things that happened in her life like being sexually abused at such a young age and getting pregnant at 14 though after giving birth

The thirty-minute to hour-long programs allowed for people to escape their problems, even if only for a short period of time (Rose). Biographer, Ilene Cooper took on the challenge of writing a biography about the complex and extraordinary life of Oprah Winfrey. In an article on the Kirkus Review website, published in 2010, a critic enjoys how the author of the biography, Up close: Oprah Winfrey, “makes excellent use of many quotes from interviews, Oprah’s own writing and, of course, her television show” (“Oprah Winfrey”). This reviewer appreciates how the biographer uses all of her resources to understand more information about Oprah.     The introduction of Outliers begins with an inspection of Italian American immigrants near the end of the 19th century, the founders of a small town in Pennsylvania, called Roseto. In a study conducted by physician Stewart Wolf, et al. researchers set out to decide how the people of Roseto were able to live longer, healthier lives than that of the people in the towns of the same region, as well as the rest of the nation. The secret of the success for the people of Roseto could be found in a nearly unanimous social integration, which focused on respect for elders, a common set of religious beliefs, and an egalitarian way of thinking. Wolf’s findings introduced the medical community to a new way of researching serious health risks; research without isolation of the subject, by including the environment of the people studied. Gladwell ends the introduction by preparing the reader to use “The Roseto Mystery” analogously with his extended definition of success.
