Living In The Present
Too many of us fail to notice the little things that occur in the moment; however, these are the most important to recognize. The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald takes place within the roaring twenties where people focused more on entertainment and partying rather than appreciating their surroundings. Jay Gatsby models this by hosting frequent parties in his glamorous mansion; however, he has never participated or takes advantage of the luxurious life he lives. In Where I Lived and What I Lived For, Thoreau and select others realized that in order to fulfill one's life with happiness they should value their surroundings. Thoreau and Fitzgerald combine to suggest that it is important to live in the present and appreciate your natural surroundings.

In this section of Thoreau’s writing, he is mainly talking about the sun rising, a time of day people do not tend to notice. He makes sure to appreciate every second and every detail of that one sunrise that we can see in the details he includes. For example, he describes it as ghostly which could stand as a bigger idea of thinking outside of the box or ignoring that part of his day intirly.
