A person who has integrity is someone who can be trusted and is considered to be honest. Academic integrity is important because it has to deal with being fair. This means that the work that you put forward is your own and that it is unique. It also means that you haven’t copied anyone’s work without their permission. Every time someone plagiarizes or something similar like it goes unreported, students who committed plagiarism took the easy way out and are either caught in the act or applauded for their behavior. You should treat others work with respect by giving them credit and citing the source where you received the work from. If you don’t cite your work and give the source credit, you are plagiarizing other people’s work. Citing others work makes sure that you didn’t give yourself the credit for the work that others have already done. This is one way how academic integrity is important when you are doing something that is school related. The second way how academic integrity is important is because of the trust that people have with each other. The reason for this is because people need to be trusted and that way they know who’s work they are using. Plagiarism can be prevented by acknowledging the original writer’s ideas. The type of citation depends on the source where you received your information. This matters because if you cite your information and it's wrong, it is considered plagiarism. Keeping your essay unique is important because you don’t want to be caught. Although highschool level plagiarism isn’t taken as serious as college level plagiarism, it should still be looked at so people won’t carry the habit in the future. As teachers and adults, we are responsible for stopping this trend and educating students about the consequences and dangers of plagiarism. I believe there are a variety of reasons individuals plagiarize. First, students are insecure with their own ability; they don’t believe they can do the work therefore they take others. Second, students believe they can get away with the act because they know others who have plagiarized, and there were not any consequences. Lastly, students are uneducated on what plagiarism is and do not know the consequences of their actions if they commit an act. These ideas will be the focus of the position taken on plagiarism in today’s academic society.
