Throughout my high school career, I’ve been recognized as a well rounded student. I engage myself in team related sports that require teamwork and reliability, extracurricular activities that require responsibility and patience, all while managing to keep up with my academics.
During my freshman year of highschool, I’ve dedicated my time and hard work to all activities offered by my former high school located in Marshall, Alaska. As for the rest of my high school adventure, I was accepted for an enrollment to a boarding school located in Sitka, Alaska. Attending Mt. Edgecumbe High School as a three year senior has been a great privilege. I’ve expanded my education and experience and adapted to new roles of responsibilities that further developed a strong sense of independence and meaning in myself. As a student of MEHS, I’ve engaged my time in many school clubs. I participated in the short-lived Tsunami Bowl Science Club. I was also apart of the award winning radio show, The Edge KCAW, I attended three consecutive years of a marine biology science based Whale Fest. I’ve also attended the Southeast Music Fest for two consecutive years as a participant in our school’s choir ensemble. I was also an active member of our school’s Battle of the Books club. As a senior, I’ve also been elected as our class representative in student government council, voted Pep Club treasurer, and participated in our volleyball team. As a child I did not know a lot about college. None of the adults in my life had been to College, my family did not talk about it, and it seemed like a distant land that I heard about only in movies and on Television. I was first introduced to college when my third grade class took a field trip to Iowa State University, clearly a much needed field trip considering my lack of exposure to higher education. I was immediately amazed by the grand architecture and massive buildings. I had never seen anything like a University campus before. The few things that I remember about the trip were that everything was big, the college students played with us, and we got to swim in the pool. While the larger purpose of the field trip may have been lost to my childhood excitement of getting to swim in a big pool, the field trip did mark the beginning of my knowledge of higher education and from then on I always viewed it as something that I would be a part of eventually, even if it did seem like a very distant future at age eight. A global citizen is that who is willing to use its voice and knowledge to make a change. No one would ever be able to make a change in just one day, it is something that takes time and devotion. I’m really interested in diversity and I’m seeking to what is my role is as a world citizen. The fact that I’m searching for an international education is the proof of my desire to establish myself as a global citizen and my interest in the world issues.
Student-athletes face many of the same pressures as their non-athlete counterparts academically. Many carry a full course load that is tightly regimented by someone other than them and they are unable to drop below 12 credits otherwise risk losing their NCAA eligibility. As much as this class has grown together, every one of us has also grown as a unique individual. We have found our talents and interests. These interests have drawn us to different activities and in turn helped shape our lives. Some of us have excelled academically while others have helped improve Summer High School by participating in activities such as Link Crew or ASB. Some of us acted in plays while others shared their musical talents by singing in the choir or performing with our outstanding band. Many of us have preferred to be involved in community service with a group like KEY Club. In addition to these school activities, many of us have invested time in jobs and other community activities.
Collegiate athletes are already under an enormous amount of pressure even before enduring career-ending injuries. According to Kissinger (2009), student athletes normally struggle with six unique challenges. Student must be able to balance both athletic and academic responsibilities, along with balancing social activities, maintaining the stresses of relationships with coaches, teammates, friends, and parents. They also have to manage athletic success and/or failures with emotional stability. More importantly they have to balance physical health and injuries with the need to steady compete and with the termination of one’s college athletic career.
Each game, my passion grew. Each team, new memories and lifelong friends were made. Sports sometimes make me feel disappointment and at loss; but it taught me to be resilient to a lot of things, like how to thrive under pressure and come out on top. Being the team captain of my high school’s football and lacrosse team showed me how having a big responsibility to bring a group together to work as one is compared to many situations in life. Currently playing varsity football, varsity lacrosse, and track I take great pride in the activities I do. Staying on top of my academics, being duel enrolled at Indian River State College, working three nights a week, and two different sport practices after school each day shaped my character to having a hard work
I was never the best swimmer, but I certainly worked hard, and had the most fun doing it. When it came time to apply to University, I didn’t have the times to qualify for the University team. However, my old coach put in a good word about my work ethic and improvement, and as a result I was on the team. Once again, through dedication, I am now set to graduate as a 4th year Bison Athlete. This dedication and hard work extends beyond sport—I’ve maintained a GPA above 4.0 (4.09 unadjusted; 4.13 adjusted) and have been honored as Academic All-Canadian each
Taking these opportunities in competitions and the classroom has required a great deal of dedication on my part. Proof of my dedication to academic excellence can be seen through my accomplishments and awards. I received the class awards for both Physics and Accounting, and have also been a part of the Number Sense Team went to the Regional UIL Tournament for 2 years in a row. The accomplishment I am most proud of is my acceptance into my school's chapter of the National Honor's Society. My membership holds me to a higher standard of excellence that I use as motivation to continue striving for my ultimate goal of having a positive impact on society. My extra-curricular activities have also aided me in pursuing my goal. My participation in Student Council and other organizations in which I am an officer has taught me valuable, life-long lessons in leadership and collaboration. As a young lady graduating from The Dalles Whatonka High School I think it’s important to be involved in as many activity’s as possible. Throughout my high school years I have been involved in many school activities and comities such as student government. I have always had an interest in athletics and played sports. These leadership and athletic roles have tough me skills that will last me a lifetime.
College Education is of the utmost importance to me especially when competing with people in my age group. A college education is also one of the most costly obligations that one must do to gain success. In my academic career, I have gain many experiences that I may not have been able to experience had I not attended a post-secondary education. A college education has never been an option for me it was always instilled in my brain as an adolescent as a top priority. In my youth I was certain of my goals and aspirations, the person that I wanted to become and where I see myself in the future. Some people in my same age group with similar upbringing as mine had ne focus. Their prerogative was to acquire money in any way that they knew how. Their options including, dealing drugs or for women prostitution and or becoming a hair stylist. I was adamant that in my profession a college education was not only necessary as a requirement to obtain a law license but also there were no exit strategies. To elucidate I am speaking of secondary options such as a technical school. My peers often believed that my choice would change and I was just hoping that their state of minds too would alter. My dreams of becoming a lawyer was slowly approaching as I reached the age of 18. High school teachers of mine often attempted to sway me into a different direction since I was not as outspoken as my fellow classmates. However, I would inform them just as I have revealed to others that my dream is everlasting and my path is clear. As a sophomore, I joined Art Club because I thought creating art was fun and relaxing. If it wasn’t for Art Club, I would have never learned how to make ceramics or know how to use the potter’s wheel. Since then, I have become proficient enough to make bowls to donate for the Organization of Soup Bowls for Hunger every year. Today completes the chapter of our lives that we have been comfortable with for the past 13 years. High school may be over, but we still have a long exciting way to go in life. From our four-year experience we will take with us the memories, good and bad, and relationships we have made with each other and the County High School staff. From these experiences we have learned and grown and will continue to do so. Growing up and moving on will be a huge part of our lives in the next few months.
