Why I Want To Pursue A Medical Degree

I am interested in acquiring new skills and this curiosity has led me to study sciences for A level. I take a particular interest in Biology and the interrelation between it and oral health. This, along side my work experience, has motivated me to pursue a Medical degree. I am aware of the challenges of medicine but I believe I can thrive in such a field. I have enjoyed studying those parts of the A level Biology course concerned with disease and its treatment and believe that by pursuing a Medical degree I will be able to satisfy my thirst for understanding the human body.

I play a role in my school’s Medicine and Dentistry Society and giving talks to my peers on an array of medical topics has given me confidence to talk to others as well as the practise preparing concise presentations on pressing current issues. Wider reading, of books such as ‘Being Mortal’ and ‘Better’ by Atul Gawande, ‘The Emperor of Maladies’ by Siddhartha Mukherjee has helped me develop an understanding of the principles underlying healthcare and patient care. Moreover, having written an extended essay on ‘Plastic Surgery and the Perception of Beauty’, my understanding of both the NHS and private sector has developed, as well as the role of social media and social pressures on medics. As a driven scientist, with a keen interest in applying myself to a skilled vocation that would allow me to interact with others, whom I can aid, medicine seems to be a fitting career path. …show more content…

The way the doctors interacted differently with young, elderly, foreign and abusive patients was revealing; an example being how a surgeon calmed down an upset patient after his surgery failed, or how they soothed nervous
