What motivated me to do volunteer work originally were, the service hours and the gains I would acquire from volunteering. I was inspired to pursue the volunteer work at St. Vincent De Paul (an organization helping the poor within the local community), as I live by my faith and through Sunday school the opportunity arose. The work began by my participation in helping the customers with prices and checkouts. I felt this volunteer work was especially significant as it not only provided me with hours and credit for doing it, but also helped the needy through Christian acts. I gained a changed perspective. The people that had nothing, but saw the good in everything, strengthened my faith. I earned the hours but it didn’t stop there. I was changed through their faith and I wasn’t the same greedy human being. I came into volunteering, in it for my own personal gain. I acquired new skills in handling and exchanging money, but also relating to people in a whole new spiritual perspective. The most memorable part of the activity was seeing faces of pure happiness when no one would expect them to be. A specific incident that made me feel good about my work was when my seemingly simple act of everyday work made a world of difference to one specific woman. Carrying her bags to her car, she offered me a hug feeling so gracious for my one deed. It gave me perspective on how just one person’s generosity or little act of kindness can affect someone so much. I would inform other young people to go into whatever you try with a willingness to change. The change from this experience guided me to my faith and even further, my relationship with God. I relied on him and prayed to him to help me help others and without the change, my selfish acts would still be continuing. I was able to find my potential career from this volunteering and gain relationships I will never lose sight of. I volunteered on November 8, 2015 from 9:00 A.M. to 7:00 P.M. at the BAPS Swaminarayan Temple in Cherry Hill, New Jersey. It felt comfortable to volunteer somewhere I'm familiar with. I go to this temple every Sunday and attend religion classes that helped me during my volunteering. I am also familiar with all the people that I worked with, but this activity helped me connect with them and we got to work together for a common goal. Some of the jobs I was in charge of doing were standing at a game booth for the girls where I would teach them a little about hinduism and then let them play a game.
It was the summer of 2013 when I was living with my grandparents and they told me about volunteering at the church. I didn’t know what they were talking about, so I took the initiative to go find out for myself that following Sunday. I was in the balcony on Sunday, when I heard the announcements saying we can volunteer for their hope food pantry. I was excited because it was going to be a chance where I can help other and get community service hours. Volunteering I began to think positive thoughts and telling myself “ I am doing a good deed”.
The first time I started volunteering was last year and it changed my perspective towards a lot of things; from the way of looking at people to how my mind works. The impact it's had on my life has been immense and life changing. From there, I constantly tried getting myself involved in giving a hand and at the same time, to widen my knowledge.
When I found out that I had to do seven hours of volunteer work I immediately knew that I wanted it to involve children. I attended the volunteer fair that was held earlier in the semester and signed up for programs such as Louie’s Kids and Wings for Kids. Unfortunately I could not volunteer for either of these programs because they were not in walking distance of the college and I did not have transportation. A couple weeks after that I saw a flyer advertising for “Reading Partners.” I attended an informational event that they held and signed up to volunteer at Memminger Elementary, which is about two blocks from the college.
My main focus on volunteering is to help and/or improve other individuals lives. Whether it’s a small thing like shoveling elderly neighbors driveways during the winter or a bigger thing like running youth group at the local church and leading prayers. Not only do the people I help get joy from it, but helping others surely puts joy in my life too. Also, with the knowledge I have acquired through high school, tutoring others is something I enjoy doing because helping others understand something difficult is very important. During school, assisting teachers with going to grab printed papers or picking up excess garbage in the cafeteria after lunch are many of the things I do to improve the school and the people in it such as students and faculty staff. I decided to not only assist those who needed a warm bed and a meal but I also spread my help to other organizations and local places. I began to help my church lending them a hand during events or just simply ushering during sunday mass. In the summers between school I also began to help a summer school program at a neighborhood elementary in which I helped around the class. During school I also made sure to sign up for every blood drive that the American Red cross conducted.
Every time I do some kind of service – I have the opportunity to learn new ideas, discover new perspectives and I've have grown as an individual. By giving back I like making people feel as though they matter, and it gives me a good feeling at the end of the day because I feel I have made a difference. I grow as a person each time I do volunteering. Some people do volunteering because they have to, but I do it because I want to. I love volunteering.
I have always enjoyed the feeling that I acquired after doing a good deed or simply helping someone out. However, I had no idea that my 40 hours of community service would turn into over 400 hours, for no reason other than the fact that I love it!! Through volunteering I have learned that many organizations exist only with the help of volunteers from the community, I have seen the amount of joy that volunteering brings to those who you are helping out, I discovered a feeling of self-satisfaction that no other activity can bring, and lastly I have learned to spend my time wisely.
My experiences have also shaped why and how I want to provide care to others. I have worked with Special Olympics for over two years and it has been nothing but rewarding. After creating trust and modeling self-confidence with an athlete, I have watched them grow out of their typical irritable behavior to interacting with others in a mature, upbeat fashion. Another experience that has influenced me was working at the food pantry. I never took into account that perhaps people actually wondered where their next meal is going to come from. Dedicating myself to a week at the food pantry, I had learned what it felt like to give back. Handing out food boxes at the end of the week not only put a smile on their faces but mine as well because I know I gave service that provided relief to many.
Volunteering enables a person to develop new skills that he or she would otherwise not have been able to develop. Unlike most other organizations, a charitable organization is happy to give positions to passionate, though inexperienced, individuals who desire to help others and benefit the community. Therefore, an individual with little experience in a field of work can gain meaningful skills that he or she can use in the future. Volunteering benefits a person by building connections with peers, improving family life, expanding career skills, overcoming self doubt, having lasting life impressions, and creating new opportunities. Just a small act can make a huge difference in someone’s life. The future is dependent on the individual person and the people they surround themselves with. Just a few hours will change both the volunteer’s life and the one that is in need.

I think this entire experience has been amazing and everyone should volunteer at least once in their life. It might even change their major! I had already planned on working with my community, specifically in the behavioral/mental health area, so this experience just opened my eyes to how much of a difference I can make by such simple gestures. This class was a way for me to get out of my comfort zone and now I will continue to volunteering even after this class ends. I also had the privilege of helping with the Meals on Wheels non profit organization. My grandfather used to be a Meals on Wheels recipient and he would share with me how he enjoyed looking forward to their company and a hot meal daily. I volunteered because I wanted to give back and help someone else’s loved one in the same way. It was very rewarding delivering hot meals to people who didn’t have the means of getting one as well as being there for them to talk to. Overall, it was a very humbling experience, it made me realize just how blessed I am and how much I take for granted daily.
