Why I Volunteer At St. Vincent De Paul

What motivated me to do volunteer work originally were, the service hours and the gains I would acquire from volunteering. I was inspired to pursue the volunteer work at St. Vincent De Paul (an organization helping the poor within the local community), as I live by my faith and through Sunday school the opportunity arose. The work began by my participation in helping the customers with prices and checkouts. I felt this volunteer work was especially significant as it not only provided me with hours and credit for doing it, but also helped the needy through Christian acts. I gained a changed perspective. The people that had nothing, but saw the good in everything, strengthened my faith. I earned the hours but it didn’t stop there. I was changed through their faith and I wasn’t the same greedy human being. I came into volunteering, in it for my own personal gain. I acquired new skills in handling and exchanging money, but also relating to people in a whole new spiritual perspective. The most memorable part of the activity was seeing faces of pure happiness when no one would expect them to be. A specific incident that made me feel good about my work was when my seemingly simple act of everyday work made a world of difference to one specific woman. Carrying her bags to her car, she offered me a hug feeling so gracious for my one deed. It gave me perspective on how just one person’s generosity or little act of kindness can affect someone so much. I would inform other young people to go into whatever you try with a willingness to change. The change from this experience guided me to my faith and even further, my relationship with God. I relied on him and prayed to him to help me help others and without the change, my selfish acts would still be continuing. I was able to find my potential career from this volunteering and gain relationships I will never lose sight of.
