I married young and poor. Although very much in love, my husband and I knew that love would not be able to sustain us. So we planned and came to the decision that we needed to go to college. With the determination to be better than where we were, and where our parents’ were, we attended school and worked multiple, minimum-wage jobs to pay for it. It took longer than planned, but we both graduated. That is when we met with the brutal truth - our prized college educations did not make us competitive workforce candidates nor did it guarantee us jobs. It was tough reality. I would daydream of a future where I was travelling the world, breaking codes and recovering government secrets. When I was a young woman, I started to prepare for this undercover ambition. My high school teachers guided me through advanced classwork, foreign languages, and exercise routines all in preparation for my future career. I even found the exact opportunity in the State Department that I was going to apply for when I was eligible to. I waited and prepared. When I went to college, my school didn’t offer any classes on spy-work, but I double majored in both Business Administration and in Fine Art – thinking I covered my basis. I had started making the arrangements to apply for the State Department when I found out that I was not physically eligible, because of an unusual auto-immune disorder that disqualifies me. However, just because I can’t travel to remote rainforests or isolated pyramids, doesn’t mean I still cannot break codes and help people. That is really what I wanted to do and I can still do it, it will just be in a different way. It will be through the computer, which is more far-reaching and involved than travelling could ever be. This certificate program will give me the knowledge to understand the cyber infrastructure, so I could work in cyber-security, cyber-terrorism, and data analytics. I have taken computer courses, so I know I have the aptitude to succeed and I know I will enjoy it. Now, with this
