Edgar Allan Poe, a well known and respected author utilizes multiple techniques to create fear and suspense in his short stories. Many of Poe’s stories such as “The Tell-Tale Heart”, “The Cask of Amontillado”, and “The Pit and the Pendulum” contain elements which thrill readers. Repetition, realism, and lack of detail along with great description in certain stories all contribute to the suspense and horror found in Poe’s pieces. Use of repetition is a very effective writing method Poe includes when creating suspense. In, “The Tell-Tale Heart” he writes, “you cannot imagine how stealthily, stealthily. . .”. (83) When Poe writes this line he makes a very tense scene, and leaves readers on the edge of their seat. The way he produces this line sounds like the slightest movement will cause a complication. Poe also writes, “It grew louder-louder-louder!” (The Tell-Tale Heart 84). In the context of this part of the story, the continual repetition of this word displays the fact that there is a problem which is worsening. The story “The Pit and the Pendulum” takes place during the Spanish Inquisition, a real event in history. During the time of the Inquisition, people were condemned and murdered, similar to the main character in “The Pit and the Pendulum”. Including true events from the past creates a realistic plot. “The Tell-Tale Heart” is another piece by Poe that utilizes the effects of realism to create fear and horror. The narrator in “The Tell-Tale Heart” dismembers a body, and then hides it. (83-84) The fact that multiple murderers have done these acts allows readers to believe this could really happen. Including actions that have been done allows there to be a more relatable feeling.
