Based on the definitions of a “right” and a “liberty” provided in the instructor’s video, I have concluded that health care is not a right. It is a liberty. “Having the right to something means that the government is obligated to take action to provide for that right. And liberty is when the government stays away and allows the people to exercise their freedom” (Davis, Video Lecture). I believe that no one has the right to health care because it supports the notion that someone has the right to someone else's life. Too many Americans see health care as a human right, and it is not. They are not seeing the difference between a need and a right. Health care is just a basic need that everyone is free to pursue. However, in my opinion, this does not mean that people should be forced to improve or make our lives better. Health care requires something from somebody else. It requires time from a doctor or a nurse. To say that we have a right to health care means that doctors are required to serve our needs, whether they like it or dislike it. Government coercion interferes with the pursuit of happiness of people like doctors and nurses, and this is absolutely unacceptable. For example, Obamacare, or better known as the Affordable Care Act, is the number one type of health care that comes to everyone’s mind when discussing these kinds of major concerns. Obamacare has more cons than it has pros. In my opinion, Obamacare is the reason that Americans see health care as a right, rather than a good. The textbook also mentions the two types of private insurances: Medicare and Medicaid. Medicare and Medicaid are two very different programs. Medicare is a federal program attached to social security and it is available to all U.S. citizens that are 65 years of age and older. It also covers people with certain disabilities and is available regardless of income (Ginsberg pp.235,
