A famous historian named John Acton once said “absolute power corrupts absolutely” Absolute power is when somebody has complete authority and is in total control of what is going on, and mot restrained by supervision or review. Absolute power is the real danger here. Absolute power turns normal people into brutal sadist. Humans cannot handle power very well because the more power one has the more it is likely to be used for personal needs. Saddam Hussien is a great example of this: he was a power hungry dictator from Iraq. He abused and deceived many of his own people and like Adolf Hitler performed ethnic cleansing. In South Africa, Nelson Mandela, who was jailed for many years on Robin Island for his desire to stop apartheid, was another strong leader who used power to bring apartheid-separatism- to an end. Power can be used for good. The sad truth is that there are not many leaders like Nelson Mandela and Martin Luther King. The reason why some leaders use power correctly is because democracy can limit the threat of the abuse of power. People who live under a regime such as Kim Jong-Il’s and his son, who has inherited his father’s power and corruption, live a life of fear because they can be killed in an instant for something incredibly trivial. These people live a life governed by the mood of the dictator. Leaders like Kim Jong-Un aren’t interested in the welfare of their people and care mostly about themselves. No one has a say in North Korea and the leader wasn’t elected. he was brought up in a corrupted way that made him self-centred and egoistical: not the ideal education for the perfect leader. When somebody has sincere and honest goals in life they get their power by gaining peoples trust and they do not get corrupted by it. In most of the cases people who gain power do whatever they like with it; they become greedy, they boss people around, and then they want more power.
