Why Children Decide To Take Drugs

According to the Government, one in every four 12th graders experienced illicit drugs in the past year (1); accordingly, there is a real danger that one of our children would be exposed to this threat. Why do young people decide to take drugs? Usually, there are four main reasons; because they want to fit in, or to feel good, or to feel better, or do better (2). Some children decide to taste drugs “because others are doing it;” other children because they want to experience the initial pleasure these substances provide, other children want to escape the anxiety of their environment, and some other children to improve their academic or athletic performance. However, the root reason is that we forget God.
If we do not have the love of our Lord in our hearts, then we will seek acceptance and recognition from our peers; and this does not come without participating in their activities. Thus, if the fellow students do drugs, then our children we will be tempted. If we do not have His love, then life feels hollow and the social stresses it puts upon us can be crushing; thus, some of our children will eventually seek a false escape. Do we chose one based on superficial and worldly criteria? Because of an ephemeral beauty and worldly possessions? Or we do seek one from God that will help us live in holiness as befitting to us Christians? Are we frequenting places of entertainment to find our spouse, or are frequenting Churches and pilgrimages? Are we trying to project a better image to the world with cosmetics and fashion, or are we trying to present a better image to our God with chastity and charity? Are we seeking references from our friends, or are we seeking the guidance of our spiritual father? By choosing a God-fearing spouse, we put the foundations for a God-fearing family.
