"'A fire! Make a fire!" At once the boys were on their feet'(William Golding pg 38). The boys wanted to make a fire because fire is the best chance at getting rescued. If they make a fire and it creates a bunch of smoke someone is liable to see it and come to see what is on fire. Golding portrays the fire as a sign of hot burning hope. The very first after thought of Ralph is to make a fire and once he mentions it to the other boys they all go wild. They think if they build a fire, they will be rescued soon. The boys all rush together to make it because they all have to stick together if they want to get off of the island safe and the only way to do that is to keep hope and have faith in each other and will. However, the group of 5 boys mentioned before make life on the island easier because they force themselves to keep the fire going and they put the fire in the highest place on the mountain. The higher the fire and hope, the more chances of rescue. Then a boat comes but the fire was out. Most of the boys have given into the impurities of the island and they started hunting and killing and hurting each other. When Ralph and his squad notice this they try to redirect the other boys and the good group of five end up getting hurt. The kids don't realize the scary decision they have been put in and they dont realize how easy it is to hurt others. Then they realize and most of the boys become crazy and they kill a few people. In the ending all of the boys beat and tortured the twins, Samneric, and then they start coming for Ralph, half of the forest is on fire and that cause the boat passing by to see it and a few soldiers get off. They don't know that Ralph's hope was at his highest point because if the soldiers hadn't came the malistic boys would have killed Ralph just like they killed the other 3

When the boys first arrived on the island, their behaviour was civilized and they attempted to convince themselves that they would soon be rescued by their parents. As the days passed, the boys began to open their eyes and realized that sitting around was not going to benefit them in any way, and most importantly it would not help them survive. Because of their new unrestricted life on the island, the boys become ruthless and replaced their previous identity.

During the time that the boys were building shelter, they began fighting amongst themselves about the conspiracy of the so-called ‘beastie’ and whether monsters are real or not. Although Ralph strongly disagreed with this idea, Jack still believed that hunting is a priority. Jack’s group successfully murders a pig but while they were gone, a ship had passed by the island. One of the very first announcements Ralph makes is that the boys will be rescued. Ralph has hope that his dad will rescue them. But Piggy, having knowledge and intellect, replies that nobody knows where they are. Ralph then says that they “must make a fire” (page 38). The thought of having a fire going gives Ralph hope. He has lost his innocence and learned about the evil that lurks within himself and all men through his experiences on the island. Ralph’s revelation to his loss of innocence and societal order among the boys is exemplified through the collapse of the attempted Democratic government, the killing of the pig, and the death of Piggy and Simon.
The impact of Jack’s savagery on the island leads to the boys forgetting the real truth about about themselves. The boys on the island are able to explain that human are evil from the beginning and that they aren’t impacted by society. The boys see the island as a place where they are free from the adult world and without any rules. The boys don’t realize that a world without rules causes the chaos on the island and the savagery within the boys. Jack’s authoritative power forces him to push the rest of the boys out of their comfort zone by making them evil being that was not there true identity before. Upon realizing that the savagery they had obtained was only destroying themselves they “wept for the end of innocence, the darkness of man's heart”(202). The power that was developed by Jack impacts everyone and destroys all of the lives that rejected him. Piggy who was the most knowledgeable character and also the weakest character was often disrespected by Jack because he opposed Jack’s power and recognizes that his power not voted for. As as result, Piggy is killed by Jack’s own boys because they too have been impacted by brute force. They killed piggy just like how they hunted pigs. To begin, survival is the key in every ones mindset. You only live once as most people say. However, with Jack and Ralph and the rest of the boys, they all seemed that all hope was lost. They had been stranded in the island for months, hoping that one day, someone will find them and return them home. Ralph was the most panicked person in the group simply because he hadn’t cut his hair and it was growing. He also did not shower at all, and he did not shave or eat as much simply due to the lack of surviving. The officer is uncomfortable thinking about the savagery of the boys, and looks off to his cruiser in the distance while Ralph weeps for "the end of innocence, and the darkness of man's heart." Golding is making a point about the hypocrisy of the civilization. In reality, the world is just a larger version of the island. The officer's comment on "the Coral Island" is also ironically significant in elevating The Lord of the Flies from a book about a group of lost boys on an island to a beautifully symbolic work of social commentary. The view presented is dark and pessimistic, making its readers look deep inside their own human nature and at the structure of society in a frighteningly different light.

However, when the boys abandon the fire which is symbolic of Ralph’s hope of getting saved, Ralph faces an internal conflict that makes him fear about their future; perhaps they will not be rescued at all. By insisting that the children should keep the fire going, he creates an external conflict with Jack whose values are different. Jack is enjoying life as a leader of the savages, and he fears that fire will possibly end his authoritarian rule over the savages. Both conflicts are resolved when Ralph finally meets the naval officer.
When the children become stranded on the island, the rules of society no longer apply to them. Without the supervision of their parents or of the law, the primitive nature of the boys surfaces, and their lives begin to fall apart. The downfall starts with their refusal to gather things for survival. The initial reaction of the boys is to swim, run, jump, and play. They do not wish to build shelters, gather food, or keep a signal fire going. Consequently, the boys live without luxury that could have been obtained had they maintained a society on the island. Instead, these young boys take advantage of their freedom and life as they knew it deteriorates.
Jack and Ralph’s motivation is used in the novel to show their interest and needs expecting from the island through the narrative; for Jack, it is mostly to impress the boys with his singing and hunting skills. The two foil characters Jack and Ralph have different desires. Jack who thinks one of the ways to survive on this island is by hunting pigs and he gives no importance to the rescue fire. Ralph who is eager to get back to his parents is always keeping an eye on the fire hoping to be rescued.
