In 1984, the focus idea lies in beliefs and how they can be broken down. Throughout the 1940’s and 1980’s, Germany and the Soviet Union were at war with other countries due to their communist leaders. Europe and the United States had free and democratic system that other nations loathed and didn’t covet to understand. Hitler and Stalin had total power over the people’s dos and don’ts. Whatever the people believed in, the leader’s followers would endeavor to break it down: they desire the people to accept them and never question their way of ruling their country. Winston Smith, the main character, was a man that reviled the way Big Brother governed. He broke various rules; such has having a diary and having sex with a person he loved. Winston didn’t have friends, lived isolated, and felt miserable. Winston was a man that hankered freedom and a rebellion against Big Brother, but was too afraid that the Ministry would send him to a forced labor camp. Also, other people were too frightened of doing illegal activities because they knew that the consequences were horrifying. If Big Brother found any illegal activities being done, then the Thought Police would go acquire the people and put them through numerous stages of pain until he had total mental power over them. He was threatened to have rats eat through his face, but since he has a phobia of rats, he yelled “Do it to Julia! Do it to Julia! Not me! Julia! I don’t care what you do to her. Tear her face off, strip her to the bones. Not me! Julia! Not me!” Winston gave up the most significant thing to him and utterly lost all the love that he had towards Julia.
