Who is to blame for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet? In the tragic story of Romeo and Juliet, there are many who are responsible for the deaths of the two lovers. However Juliet is the most responsible of all. If she did not fake her death in Friar Lawrence’s plan, Romeo would not have thought about killing himself. Although, even without the Friar’s plan, Juliet would have committed suicide anyways. Lastly Juliet is further responsible for her own death that took place after the Friar’s plan because she chose death over becoming a nun. When Romeo was banished, Juliet and the Friar decided to come up with a plan to fake Juliet’s death, this was a way to prevent her marriage with Paris so she could live with Romeo. Juliet faking her death leads to a misunderstanding as Balthasar states, “Then she is well, and nothing can be ill. Her body sleeps in Capel’s monument, and her immoral part with angels lives. I saw her laid low in her kindred’s vault and presently took post to tell it to you.” (Act 5, Scene 1 Lines 17-21) Balthasar was not told about the plan so he share with Romeo what he saw. Friar Lawrence starts to get nervous and wanted to leave as quickly as possible. The Friar gives Juliet a choice telling her, “Come, I’ll dispose of thee among a sisterhood of holy nuns.” (Act 5, Scene 3 Lines 156-157) Juliet had the choice of surviving and starting a new life as a nun but instead she chose to stay with her dear Romeo. “Go, get thee hence, for I will not away.” With those words from Juliet, the Friar flees.
