Written by Langston Hughes, the poem “Mother to Son”, offers insight on the author's life advice that she’s giving her son. The mother, begins by telling of the hardships one may encounter in life, and then continues to explain how you cannot give up, but keep going. In this situation, the speaker is very encouraging telling how she is still struggling through her not perfect life, but one cant give in to the roadblocks they may encounter. Starting off, the author uses many different analogies to express the challenges/ problems one has to deal with, which adds a different way of reading this, giving the reader a visual picture. Usually, author’s use diction and word choice to add to a poem or their piece of work, in Langston Hughes’ case, its adds something that isn't directly in the poem. The way Hughes uses contractions and quick to the point examples, shows us how that can be related to the poem in the way, that you can get over these things quick and easier if you don't give up and don't show weakness. Which in turn helps the cadence of the poem by letting it sound the same throughout and not change tones too often. The use of symbolization is the main contributor to the theme of the poem. A symbol that stands out is when the author tells about her journey overcoming her hardships. The way this is symbolized is very unique, for it represents a staircase, that hasn't been perfect,” I’se been a-climbin’ on, And reachin’ ladin’s”(lines 9-10). This helps show a reader who may not be familiar with the subject, what these journeys can be like, by relating it to something very simple.
