Hester’s and Dimmesdale’s Sin Hester Prynne dealt with her sin and lived, while Dimmesdale suffered with his and lived, but notreally living.In novel The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne Hester commits a very serious crime which she is punished for. Hester lives in a puritan society and she violated a law they have enforced and she is forced to wear a red scarlet letter for the rest of her life. She committed this sin of adultery with Dimmesdale the town preacher. Hester’s daughter pearl is an everyday reminder of her sin and that is why the town council lets her live. Hester was an outcast at the beginning of the book, but now she is looked upon by many of the townspeople as able. At the beginning of the book Hester has to stand on the scaffold for three hours with pearl and listen to all the harsh comments about her sin. Hester becomes stronger as a because of her sin “Hester Prynne set forth towards the place appointed for her punishment” (Hawthorne 38). Dimmsdale decides that he did not want anyone to find out he was Hester’s lover. Hester’s sin is shown on the outside everyone knows about her sin and she can move on with her life. Dimmsdale on the other hand does just the opposite he has to deal with the guilt of his sin. Hester lives off from the community in a cottage where her and pearl live. She is excluded from all the townspeople and the community. Dimmsdale deals with his sin different than Hester, Dimmesdale does not let anyone know that he was Hester’s lover. Hester throughout the book has to wear the red scarlet “A”, Dimmesdale has his own scarlet letter burning in him “Not a stitch of that embroidered letter, but she has felt it in her heart” (Hawthorne 38). His sin is weighing on him and the guilt is making him sick
