The first ever adaptation of the famous novel Dracula by Bram Stoker, was produced in 1922. Since then, it has set the standards for many popular Dracula films following. Some of the most iconic original Dracula films have influenced modern day vampire films, books, and TV series interpretations of appearance, abilities, monster, and underlying sexual stigmas. Dracula, like any vampire, is best known for his distinct, sharp fangs. Long tapering fangs allow a vampire to easily pierce the skin of their victim to suck their blood. These fangs are the main feature we see on vampires, and will always be present on a vampire, whether that be on film or on paper. Along with this, another distinguishable feature is the pale skin. Since vampires are an unbalance of nature, they possess supernatural abilities. An extremely common ability is mind control, known as compulsion. As seen in the original Dracula films, compulsion plays a huge role, allowing many of the characters to follow Dracula’s orders. We also see this is plenty modern day adaptations such as the TV series Vampires Diaries, and book serious Vampire Academy. Along with this, we see many other powers as well such as lighting fast speed seen in Twilight, quick healing in Vampire Diaries, and magic in Vampire Academy. Although these abilities vary from work to work, they are all supernatural abilities. Although the earlier films may seem like nothing to horror films we see today, they were considered scary for that time period. Since then, we have had substantial improvement in graphic and visual effects. We no longer need to solely rely on things such as makeup and costume. Since the time period Dracula first came out was not exposed to this advanced effects, the techniques they used such as makeup, costume, and music was enough to terrify the audience. The number one reason why vampires are such monsters is their need for human blood. That makes us the prey, and with vampire’s special supernatural abilities, that makes us easy prey. Although vampires in some TV shows and movies such as Twilight, Vampire Diaries, and True blood, have other means of blood consumption.
