Beowulf is a very popular poem although the origins is unknown, but dates back to the 8th century. Throughout the poem, Beowulf is considered a hero for his brave actions. The poem is about Beowulf killing several sea monsters before his death, especially a very popular one, Grendel. The poem is faction because a human cannot defeat multiple sea monsters by himself with a sword or his bare hands. The poem was written about the defeat of sea monsters by a hero only to entertain the audience ("Beowulf"). From Beowulf’s childhood, he was known as a hero. He used to attack trolls and save people from sea monsters. It is very unlikely for a young child to be able to perform these task. But only because I had to stop in the open waters and struggle against a sharp-toothed monster that would have slain us both” (Storrie and Randall, 14). This part of the story is faction because Beowulf would not have been able to defeat a sea creature with only a sword. Grendel tried to attack the men who were with Beowulf and later Beowulf himself. Beowulf fought back grabbing Grendel’s arm. It is said that, “the very strength of that grasp sent a thrill of fear through Grendel” (Damon). This part of the poem is faction because a human-being could not possibly grasp the hand of a monster causing a thrill of fear. During the battle, Beowulf pulled Grendel’s arm off from his body. Beowulf could not have pulled the monster’s arm off, making this part of the poem fictional as well. A human does not have the strength to battle Grendel and also pull his arm off at the same time. After the battle, Beowulf was known as the ‘dragon slayer’. Beowulf was never given the name ‘dragon slayer’ after any of the other monsters he defeated. He was given the name after the defeat of Grendel because it gave significance to the defeat.
