Witches Truly True Or Revenge Three characters most responsible for the witch trials are Abigail who wants John Proctor, Mary who desires to be truthful, and Tituba who just wants to live to see tomorrow. In the story '' The Crucible'' by Arthur Miller Abigail, Mary, and Tituba all want something. With the cost of wanting is taking and for that they cause the witch trails to start in Salem. The three characters most responsible for the witch trail are three ladies Abigail, Mary, and Tituba. By all means Abigail is the evil mastermind who starts the witch trails. Abigail wants John Proctor for herself. In the dramatic tragedy Abigail says '' I know how you clutched my back behind your house and sweated like a stallion whenever I come near! Or did I dream that? It's she who put me out, you cannot pretend it were you. I saw your face when she put. me out, and you loved me then and you do now!''(Miller 549). In the beginning of the story Mary says ''Abby, we've got to tell. Witchery's a hangin' error, a hangin' like they done in Boston two years ago! We must tell the truth, Abby! You'll only be whipped for dancein', and the other things!'' (Miller 410).This tells that Marry regrets dancing and doing other things in the forest , also desires to be truthful. Later on in the story Mary tells Proctor '' I cannot, they'll turn on me'' (Miller 11273). This indicates she is spineless. She does not want to help Proctor save Elizabeth's life because she does not want to stand up to Abigail. When she tried to be truthful Abigail and the girls all went against her clamming that she is witch. Mary as the spineless girl she is, she blames John Proctor for being with the devil.
