Finding love in life could be very task difficult for some people. This is an example in Lisa Olstein's story called Where the use of cannon is impreactical. They talks about missing love and is thinking to do things with their lover. The person dreams of meeting their lover in the park and practicing ancient arts with them. The author uses structure to show the reader that the story is not very long with medium sized sentences and 1 stanza. She also shows that there are 21 sentences and punctuation with commas. The author's use of tone conveys the idea that the authors feels sad about the subject because the person is trying to find the love that he is missing and is searching everywhere for it and when he talks about the dark, dark woods, he is talking about how he feels without his love. Imagery is used to show that when the author said " Here we are in the dark, dark woods " it means that the perspective of the main character that it is very dark. The author's use of figurative language to show the reader that there is simile when she said " I will sleepwalk all night not girlish but zombie-like ". The author show symbolism to show an object that repersent an idea when the she said mislaid love becuase the person is looking for their love. All of these elemnts fuction together because they all help show that the person is trying to find their love, but is also making the person depressed becuase they can not find their love. This quote demonstrates how the author uses descriptive words to create a mental image which gives the text more of an appeal to the reader's sense such as vision. “She could see his face now, in the tired light. His mouth was open and his skin was the color of eggshells. Whisker coated his jaw and chin, and his ears were hard and flat. He had a small but misshapen nose” (Zusak 201). The quotes allows the reader to visualize what the characters facial features looked like through the use of descriptive words. Imagery helps bring the story to life and to make the text more exciting. The reader's senses can be used to determine the observations that the author is making about its characters. In this short, but charming story, Amy Tan uses imagery to bring the story to life. With figurative language, the reader is immersed into the Chinese culture and can better relate to the characters. Tan main use of imagery is to better explain each character. Often instead of a simple explanation, Tan uses metaphors, similes, or hyperboles to describe the person, this way they are more relatable and their feelings better understood.

Throughout the entire memoir Elie used figurative language. Figurative language is something an author can use to help their reader paint a mental picture. A few examples are simile, metaphor, and imagery. Elie Wiesel uses figurative language throughout Night and in the passage describing Madame Schachter screaming about fire in the cattle car which is an example of imagery.

In the story "The Storm," by Kate Chopin, and "The Chrysanthemums," by John Steinbeck, imagery is an integral element in the development of the characters and situation, as well as the development of theme.
One example is when Walter Dean Myers wrote this simile, “The voice high and brittle like dry twigs being broken.” This simile helps to show the reader that the person coming up to Greg wasn’t big or strong, he is not intimidating. Another example of a simile in The Treasure of Lemon Brown is, “Father's words like the distant thunder in the streets of Harlem still rumbled in his ears.” This simile helps the reader understand Greg's father, the way his tone is described makes the reader believe Greg's dad is a big, strict parent. Furthermore this simile also helps the reader understand Greg's feelings, the “thunder still rumbling” helps the reader understand that Greg’s father's words are loud and repeating in his head. Another example of figurative language in The Story of Lemon Brown is when the author writes in personification, “Gusts of wind made bits of paper dance between the parked cars.” In this case the personification is used to help describe the setting. The fact that bits of paper were flying around the place probably means that Greg does not live in the nicest of neighborhoods. In the story The Treasure of Lemon Brown, the author uses figurative language to develop settings and characters.
Symbolism is the use of a person, place, or thing to represent an idea or quality. In the story The Yellow Wallpaper is filled with symbolism the pattern of the wallpaper, the moonlight, and the house. The pattern of the yellow wallpaper can be seen as a cage. This can be why the narrator feels like she is trapped inside the wallpaper. The theme of this book is that the human capacity to adapt to and find happiness in the most difficult circumstances. Each character in the novel shows this in their way. For instance, their family is randomly taken from their home and forced to work but they still remain a close nit family. In addition, they even manage to stick together after being separated for one of their own. These show how even in the darkest time they still manage to find a glimmer of hope and they pursued on.

Edgar Allan Poe has a unique writing style that uses several different elements of literary structure. He uses intrigue vocabulary, repetition, and imagery to better capture the reader’s attention and place them in the story. Edgar Allan Poe’s style is dark, and his is mysterious style of writing appeals to emotion and drama. What might be Poe’s greatest fictitious stories are gothic tend to have the same recurring theme of either death, lost love, or both. His choice of word draws the reader in to engage them to understand the author’s message more clearly. Authors who have a vague short lexicon tend to not engage the reader as much.

Symbols is a great literary device that can help give messages to the reader without the author being too direct. In the story, “Barns Burning” by William Faulkner, Symbolism helps analysis different emotions and meaning throughout the story.
Symbolism is commonly used by authors that make short stories. Guin is a prime example of how much symbolism is used in short stories such as “The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas” and “Sur.” In both of these stories Guin uses symbolism to show hidden meanings and ideas. In “The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas” there is a perfect Utopian city, yet in this perfect city there is a child locked in a broom closet and it is never let out. A few people leave the city when they find out about the child, but most people stay. Furthermore, in “Sur” there is a group of girls that travel to the South Pole and reach it before anyone else, yet they leave no sign or marker at the South Pole. Guin’s stories are very farfetched and use many symbols. Both “Sur” and “The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas” have many symbols such as colors, characters, objects, and weather. The four types of symbols that Guin uses help the readers understand the themes in her short stories. Although her stories are farfetched, they need symbolism in them or the reader would not understand the theme; therefore the symbols make Guin’s stories much more enjoyable.
The final piece of figurative language is irony. Irony is almost a sort of mockery, or a satire. What I mean is, for example, if a person feared flying all their life, but finally decided to fly, and died in a plane crash. Irony in this poem is when he writes “scared of being outcast , afraid of common fate.” In this he says that people are afraid of being different than everybody, yet they also scared of being the same as everyone. This is irony.
Over the past few months in class we have learned about many aspects of literature. Some examples of them are characterization, setting, style, tone, allegory, theme, and symbolism. I chose to write this essay about the symbolism aspect that is featured in so many great works of literature. Two such stories that we have read in which symbolism is demonstrated is in The Chrysanthemums by John Steinbeck, and The Worker in Sandalwood by Majorie Pickthall.
Another rhetorical strategy incorporated in the poem is imagery. There are many types of images that are in this poem. For example, the story that the young girl shares with the boy about drowning the cat is full of images for the reader to see:
