There are many components and variables that go into making a great vs. a not so great photo. These elements include light, exposure, composition, angle of view, and stopping action.
Light plays a huge role in the tone and quality of a photograph, and there are many different sources of light. Light can come from natural or artificial sources. Natural (or daylight) is arguably the most dynamic source of light since it occurs naturally. It can encompass a broad range of color temperatures and intensity depending on many variables, like time of day.
Artificial sources of light include fluorescent lighting, incandescent lighting, and flash photography. Fluorescent bulbs are acceptable to use for shooting photos, and offer a bright light with lower contrast. Incandescent bulbs often add an orange-yellow color to a photo, and is much harsher light source than others. The camera flash is a reliable and predictable light source, and mimics daylight. An overexposed photo has too much light, but an underexposed photo does not have enough light. An optimally exposed photograph will have the right details in both the dark and the bright parts of the picture, to deliver a quality print.
There are several tools a photographer can use to adjust the light/exposure of a photograph. Aperture is a part of a camera with a variable opening used to control the amount of light in the lens. Shutter speed adjustments can be used in conjunction with the aperture to adjust the lighting as well.
