What does it mean to be American? Poet Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “America is another name for opportunity. Our whole history appears like a last effort of divine providence on behalf of the human race.” What Ralph Waldo Emerson means by this is that America is the land for a new start. It is where you can be free to express yourself and be who you want to be. People have been coming to the United States for new opportunity for centuries. In this essay I will research what it means to be an American and what defines us. For this essay I decided to ask people what they thought it meant to be an American. There is no definitive response to this question, but one thing holds true—the reply is linked to what that particular person believes is the national identity of the United States. America has always been looked at as “The New World” where people from all over come to fulfil their dreams. Their dreams may not have been exceptional, but only to have enough to survive, have a house where their children could be raised and feel free and protected. Now, according to Webster’s online dictionary Americanism is defined as a custom, trait, belief, etc., peculiar to the United States of America or its citizens, but to me it means so much more.
The voice of America bellows with the sound of freedom and individuality, which reflect the core values of the American society. This voice belongs to Ralph Waldo Emerson, a Transcendentalist writer, who outlines the main value of Americans: individualism. While Thoreau and Dickinson voice this supreme value, Ralph Waldo Emerson transcends these voices not only by discussing individualism, but as well by narrating how to achieve it.
Through social media, we get to see what everyone is doing on daily basis. Compared to our parent’s young years, rather than sending letters via mail, social media has made it easier to communicate with family members throughout the country. In addition, growing up there was a lot of confusion as what my identity was regarding nationality.

An American is someone who is free to do whatever whenever he wants. He is someone who doesn't care about who judges him or what people think. All he cares about is his version of the American dream. His version may be different from everyone else's but an American has the freedom to be different in whatever way he wants to. This is what an American is.
Western Europeans came to America to start new lives, with new laws, a new social system but all in all to become new men. In contrast African emigrants were brought to America to tend to the needs of the settlers from Europe. They were brought over to be slaves. Each of these views are views of St Jean de Crevecoeur and Fredrick Douglass.
In the year of 1600’s, the United States of America was being colonized by European countries especially by England. However, on 4th of July 1776 America became independent after having drafted the “Declaration of Independence” initiated by Thomas Jefferson [History of the United States, Wikipedia]. The difference between these two time periods shows that Britain had colonized America for about 176 years which ultimately led to prosper European cultures. Although America became an independent nation, European culture was still playing its role. Therefore, American writers namely Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau presented an idea about American Identity.
What does it mean to be an American? Can this statement ever really be defined since America is a melting pot of different races, religions, political views, social views and so on and so fourth. To be an American can mean virtually anything and whether or not somebody supports national symbols is just another part of being and American. As Americans we have the right to disagree with the government, the right to protest against something unjust, the right to burn a flag in disgrace because after all we have freedom of speech. To some these things are un-American, but to others they are the reasons America is such a wonderful place to live. There is no definite answer to this question, but many different possibilities.
What does it mean to be an American? To be an American is to be prideful,bold, patriotic, and most of all free. Just like in the constitution, these things are self-evident, that all Americans are entitled to the things mentioned as well as many others.
America means so much to me and I am so blessed and fortunate to be living here. There are so many different words that I can use to describe America, but I am going to only use three of them. The three honoring words that I think America deserves are religion, sacrifice, and freedom. There is no possible way to fully express my gratitude to all of my ancestors who put so much effort into creating this wonderful nation. But I am going to try my hardest to honor them as much as I can. So please enjoy what I have to say about what America means to me.
America a melting pot of different ethnicities, traditions, religions, etc. However, what does it mean to be an American? Society engraves into the minds that Americans should be wealthy, educated, and most importantly white. This description of Americans that society has is the opposite of someone of color. Langston Hughes writes “I, Too” in the perspective of African-Americans who are being oppressed, while Walt Whitman the poet of “I Hear America Singing” is viewing the opulent America.
The definition of an American, is someone who is a citizen of the United States. Many African Americans, and immigrants struggled to become actual Americans in their lifetimes, because others didn 't see them as actual people; and based it on the color of someone. In today 's world people who live in America consider themselves as Americans, but to me there is certain qualities that make a person an American. To me being a true American is not based off of what Country they were born in, or what race their parents are, or even if they were immigrated to the United States. People from all over the world would say that maybe people could base this off of someone 's family heritage, or where they were before they came to America. If you were asked what makes an American an American what would you base it off of? To me there are four specific characteristics that make a person a true American; those three things would be, freedom, individuality, belief in the country, and happiness.
