John F. Kennedy described political courage to belong to those who “does what he must- in spite of personal consequences, in spite of obstacles and dangers and pressures” (“Lesson 1”). According to President Kennedy those who make personal scarifies, despite the loss of friends or fortune, were politically courageous. Several leaders demonstrated political courage by standing up for what they believed in. President Woodrow Wilson demonstrated political courage on several occasions prior to, during, and after World War I. President Wilson was a man of “peace and progressivism” (Gates), despite the ongoing World War. President Wilson risked his contentment, friendships, political support, and wellbeing to enforce his belief that peace amongst the nations was achievable through moral decision making and amicable negotiations. His statement upset many Americans, one portion of the American population wanted to support the Central Powers because a majority of themselves and their ancestors emigrated from Germany and Ireland. Meanwhile, more traditional American’s threw their support behind the Allied Powers due to the country’s English roots and assistance from France during the American Revolution. Despite the torpedoing and sinking of the RMS Lusitania, by German forces (Bryan) , President Wilson continued to urge patience in America.
