"I wouldn 't sell my child," A quote from the short story,” Adopted Son,” by Guy de Maupassant which is a story of a woman wanting to adopt a child from a content family. An unconceivable thought for most parents to sell their children for money, but not for the Vallins in the story “Adopted Son”. With that said, does the option become more conceivable if the child would have a better life? Which brings up the topic of adoption in today society, because each generation wishes to give their child a better life than they had, and in the Vallins decision it worked out for the family and their son Jean.

And who is to be blamed when money is how the world goes round it is how we pay bills, it is how we get from point A to B, and how we eat. In addition to the theme of money within the story it also is controversial topic of adoption and possibly putting ones child up for adoption. For example, a person who cannot financially or physically take care of a child the best options is putting the child up for adoption, so the child can have a better life. With that said, to some it is an unconceivable thought to leave ones own flesh and blood in someone else’s care.
To conclude the story of “adopted son” we can see envy, greed, and wrath. Envy in the eyes of Madame Henri d 'Hubieres for wanting a child not of her own. Greed in the eyes of the Vallins for the money they will collect from the adoption. Also wrath in the eyes of Charlot who was infuriated that his parents did not sell him to Madame Henri d 'Hubieres.
