In “ The Lottery “ Shirley Jackson uses symbolism and setting to emphasize her point that the world is a judgmental place and tends to follow tradition blindly, whether it's a good one or not. One of my favorite quotes that I have heard is “ those who live glass houses shouldn't throw stones “. I think that we as Americans need to do a way better job of that. When Shirley Jackson describes the setting in this story she makes it sound like a normal small town in America.
