“I declare to you that a woman must not depend upon the protection of a man, but must be taught to protect herself, and there I take my stand,” Susan B. Anthony once said. Anthony, who was a prominent women’s suffragist in the 19th Century, spent most of her life ensuring that minorities would never be deprived of their natural, God-given rights. Although Anthony petitioned for equality in general, her main focus was women’s rights, and fought for their integration into society until the day she died in 1904. Women’s rights, although not specifically mentioned in many pro-equality documents during the times of early America, has been a crucial topic of debate in countries worldwide. However, throughout the years women across the globe have fought for these rights and have even given their lives for the possibility of equal opportunity. Over the centuries, women have fought relentlessly for themselves and others and to this day, because of their hard work and dedication, women have many of the same rights as men and can be a successful member of society. Women today no longer have to worry about being denied a job, the right to vote, or even being able to play a sport due their gender. Although today’s women have these rights, the idea of equality would have never been introduced without the writings and ideas of the early-American colonists. Therefore, it is suggested that Age of Reason literature shaped the national character through the exploration of equal opportunity.
